Good deal, glad you found the switch.

Odds are the new switch will fix this, but if it still wants to crank all the time with the new switch theres probably a cross in the wiring somewhere.

Keep us posted.

uthere is a panel below the steering wheel you must take it off in order to locate the ignition switch on the lower part of the column.

well i put the new switch in, and when i turned the key to start the truck, the lock cliked as usual, but there was no turning resistance. the electrics didnt even turn on. im beginning to think that it was a faulty cylinder this whole time and it finally busted on me. bummer.

The pin in the steering column has to fit inside the pin hole in the new ignition switch. Did you make sure it did?

It's the plastic ignition switch with an 8 wire connector plugged into it.

Thats the one i'm talking about.

If you remove that connector & it stops cranking when it should'nt be cranking, the switch has a short in it.

Sounds like you swapped the lock cylinder??

Looks like theres a cross in the wiring somewhere between the ignition switch & the starter relay.

Does it stop cranking if you shift to reverse or drive? If it does the cross is between the ignition switch & the neutral safety switch. If it doesnt the cross is between the neutral safety switch & the starter relay.

If you have a decent set of wiring diagams they will tell you where the electrical connectors are located. Dont know about yours, but the factory wiring diagrams for my 87 show 2 connectors.

Connect your voltmeter to the wire with the rubber boot & open the connector closest to the ignition switch. Does the voltage go away?

If it does you can run a new wire from that point to the starter relay & tape off both ends of the old wire.

If you dont have wiring diagrams there isnt much that you can do except take it to a good independant shop & let them fix it.

you dont think there could be any relation to an overcharged battery, or bad alternator or starter do you? i dont know where any wires could have crossed, except the solenoid when i replaced it, but i dont think i would have messed that up. what leads should be going to each side of the unit? thanks again 87

Connect your voltmeter to the rubber boot & if you see voltage there with the key removed there is a cross in the wiring somewhere between the ignition switch & the starter relay.

Any difference when you shift to drive or reverse?
