ithought it would be good idea to change transmission fluid before going on trip until i was at ford purchasing anti freeze and asked about mercon sp " how much and cost" i was told that it was only sold in quarts at 5.95qt and i need 15 qts so i deceided to hold off until i asked on here if this is right.i didnt even ask about the filter. so is this high or sounds right? whats filter cost? anything i should know about the change?
Yes its true Mercon SP is very expensive. Valvoline also makes it but it is not much cheaper. The external filter is only about $15. How many miles do you have on your truck?

Be Grateful, my dealership wanted $9.95/quart for Mercon SP!! Send me a message and I can tell you a few places that sell it even cheaper than your dealer.

Are you sure that Valvoline makes Mercron SP ?? If they do your the first to say so.
As I understand it Ford has not and will not release the license for Mercon SP, which is the ONLY transmission fluid that will work in a factory 5R110. It's cheaper to pay the money to the dealership for the fluid than have to worry about paying 4K for a new tranny.
I saw it at a Napa store here in San Diego. I did not purchase it because it was only slightly less than my cost for the Motorcraft SP. The Napa store looked it up though and said it was compatable?
Back to Bigkahunna, if you have not changed the filter in the pan in the last 30k I would replace both filters. Thats just me though, if you have 100K, your warranty is up and better to spend a little on maintenance than a new tranny? JMO

The Valvoline in your link is ONLY for Mercon applications. There are 3 diferent types of Mercon: Mercon, Mercon V, and Mercon SP
So, the Valvoline is only for Mercon applications.
I just had my fluid and 2 filters changed at 35,000 miles which I believe is around the time it should be done. I had no drain on the torque converter so it only took about 10-11 liters(qts). Some have drains on them I was told and that would release almost all the tranny fluid. I haul a 14,000 lb 5ver a lot and wanted to have fresh fluid in it. Cost was $220.00 canadian about $180.00 $US.Truck comes off lease Nov 1 2007 but has 2 long trips left for her to do.
My 03 only took 9 because my converter could not be drained. Not sure on my 07?
If you are standing in front of the truck the external filter is on your left next to the radiator, its the small silver screw on canister and the filter looks like a small roll of toilet paper. The second is in the tranny pan.
I looked through all my reciepts. The filters are all listed as filters so could be air, fuel, oil or trans.Try 3C3Z-7A098-AA not sure if this is the external or internal filter though?
