i have only had my truck for about 4 months now and it now has 41,000 miles i keep hearing that 6.0s have problems not sure what they r could some one please tell what a few of these issues are so i know what to look for
by the way i have a 2004 f350 with the 6.0 right now it only has a k n filter kit on it for now
No problems with mine either (05 with 35k miles) or my brother's (03 with 98k miles), but after reading several different forums, it appears to be a few common issues:
Head Gaskets - more often than not, I think this is due to having a tuner/chip and a heavy foot, but i"ve also read about stock trucks having issues too. I believe the headgaskets were improved in 2005. Many who run a tuner will replace the head bolts with head studs for a better seal.
EGR system - Problems with this usually presents as a drivability concern, like stuttering, low power, excess smoke, etc. I think this will be less of a problem moving forward because we are now using reformulated Diesel fuel with much less sulfer in it.
Turbo vanes - The turbo vanes are moved in this system to maximize the engine's power at all RPM's, and sometimes they gum up. This also should benefit from the newer fuel formulation.
That's the stuff I read about mostly for problems, along with fewer complaints about injectors and oil leaks. Hope that helps, and I'm sure some more knowledgeable folks will be along soon, along with a few 6.0 haters.
06 6.0 cc dually love this truck 9000+ miles no problems,as with any machanical machine you will have your problems.most of the problems seam to be the early 6.0 years. newer ones less. as what jimrsx says. also check out the 6.0 forums.them gas guys i think dont like us diesels.
I know what you mean, after reading this board I'm afraid to drive my truck. I just got a used 06 f-250 cc sb king ranch with 15k miles on it. I got this truck to keep for 10-15 years, with its 1st 5 years as a "Sunday School Truck" and then to be turned into farm use. I sought out the diesel hoping for a long life. I don't know if most of the posters here have had troublefree experiences or not. Injectors, Turbos, EGR, constant reflashes, etc. Somebody please tell us we didn't make a mistake!!!
you will not hear nor see much positve in the forum nor in real life. people usually complain about how much something sucks, and mainly that is what you get here. fte is a site for d-i-yers and naturally the complaints flowed in. i work on these trucks and i would love to own a 03 year model, and everyone says to stay away from them. no i am not crazt, nor do i have alot of spare time. these trucks are a breed of there own and ford did not let out the secrets to maintaing these so naturally there were problems. it is like a new baby. they cant tell you if they are sick or whats wrong with them. sooner or later you get the hang of the kid and they grow up into a normal healthy person. well maybe that was a bad analogy but oh well. i have always felt these things made these trucks selfdestruct- little or no maintanence, tuners with a careless owner, BAD fuel.

I'd put the stock air filter back on it. Haven't heard much good about aftermarket air filters for 6.0's
Other than that I haven't had any problems with mine that weren't dealer induced (and it will be a cold COLD day in hell before I take my truck back to THAT particular dealer)........My truck pulls like an ape and runs like a rocket......There IS a reason why I call my truck "The Warhorse"
I came here to be educated on the care and feeding of one of these 6.0 animals, because I didn't have a CLUE about small diesels till I came here. Never even owned one before. My Dad has 1 GM diesel (and that was the picture defination of a piece of JUNK) and my mom had a Mercedes Benz (little 5 cylender non turbo inline, ran good but you could time it through the quarter mile with an hourglass). Worked about BIG diesels all my life, so that gave me a bit of a head start though..........
If I were you I'd just drive the thing (be sure to take it for a LONG drive now and then, these trucks like a lot of exercise) and enjoy it. With proper maintaince (DON'T skimp on this) you should be fine.

vatreefarmer, just like in life there are some that don't feel useful if they're not complaining about something !!!
Geeze, who in their right mind would want to be President ????
Sorry - no political discussion started
While some have had legitimate problems,
I don't think it's been as high a % as presented by some....
Heck - didn't ToyOats just recall a half million or something like that ???
back in the early days I used to do Statistical Analysis
(well, I didn't, I just talked that puter language and da puter did it !)...
When we were told our random averages weren't correct (although they were)
I'd shock the heck outta the arrogant incompetents by just asking
what they wanted the numbers to BE - and we'd stop wasting all that expensive computer time and just type it out on a typewriter for em...
Thanks for your support. Maybe a simple page on this site for "newbies" would be a good idea. Address stuff like is a fuel additive necessary, if so do you double it at certain temps, when do you need to plug it in, what color smoke is normal, does Rotella foam and cause problems, etc. Just browsing this great site for a week has given me more questions than I have answers. Obviously the more we all are educated about these things, the less problems will appear in this forum.
We want members to post not just read...ask any question does no matter how many times it has been answered, there is always good info in communications.
i think that if you did a real survey, you would have way more people with the good ones than the bad ones! im extremly happy with my 06, already have 18,000 problem free miles, ya im a freak and i think i hear something, or feel something sometimes but like i said im a freak, ive had many vehicles in my young life(im only 28) and i can tell you i enjoy nothing more than driving my 6.0! its by far the funnest and nothing makes me happier to hear my mbrp cool duals barking in the summer with my windows down! hammer down!
Just enjoy your truck and drive it like you stole it! IMO, many of the problems were suspected problems that became real problems when the owner took the truck in for exploratory maintenance.
Just stay on top of your maintenance (oil/filter changes at 5000 mi max interval, fuel filter changes at 15000 mi max interval, drain water separator regularly). Stick with OEM/Racor oil/fuel filters and stay away from "will fit" filters. Use API CI-4, CI-4+, or CJ rated oil. Use good quality fuel from a high volume dealer (I also recommend a good fuel additive but others may disagree). Don't let your fuel get too low (if the fuel light is on you're too low IMO) before refilling. Stay away from repeated short trips and let your engine fully warm up before running it hard.
Well, I'm sure I missed a few and others will help fill in the blanks. But if you follow these tips, you'll be fine.
