hey I just bought a 1982 ford f100 4.9l V6 with an automatic transmission and the shift indicator doesnt work, it just stays on park when i shift gears. I figure it might be something as simple as a loose wire. If anybodys dealt with this problem or has some advice id appreciate it.
thanks
will
Yea...if you take the plastic collar off the steering column you will find a white tube with a green string inside. It wraps around from the upper right column down aroud and ends up on top. It is then attached with a small screw. check to make sure it is attached. Its easy to remove the gauge cluster and forget to put it back on. If it is on there you will need to remove the guage cluster to see if it is broken. But that is a fairly simple job that can be done with a phillips screw driver.
well i took a look at it and the wire is broken up by the screw. is it relatively easy to replace this wire? also any advice on getting the ***** for the lights and wipers off? i cant tell if theyre supposed to pull off or not. thanks for the help!
Yes the cable and plastic sheath are easily replaced.
That is IF you can find a replacement.
Not sure if Ford still sells new ones or not. Wouldnt hurt to ask.
As for the *****, if you look at the bottom of the ***** you will find a slot. In this slot is a spring clip. Insert a screwdriver into the slot and pull backwards on the spring clip as you pull the ***** off.
Do a search for wiper and light control **** removal there are several threads including pictures.
use a small hook tool to get those ***** off. Its kind of confusing to figure out if youve never done it before, but once you get it and look inside youll understand. Basically, grab a hook tool, and push on the bottom part of the back of the ****. Pull it off with your other hand.
You could snag a guage cluster out of a junk yard or eBay if you wanted. You could also grab one with a factory tachometer if you don't already have one. I don't think they are that expensive.
