should have just included this with the last post. I have pulled the original colom and box, plan on using a tilt colom I obtained from a non-ford source. Problem is I need a steering box for the truck, any suggestions? I'm still using the original straight axle
When we were updating all of our front end stuff, the people at Chassis Engineering recommended using the Steering Box and Pitman Arm from a Late '70's model Cutless. Reason being the tight fit. They weren't kidding. We're also going with the tilt steering.
You can kinda see the box and pitman arm in the 10th photo in my gallery.
Yes that does help, and raises some new questions. Although my truck is a 42, I assume the front axles would be very much the same except for your one spring to my two. Anyway the front steering has been as best I can tell reengeneered by the farmer who had the truck (my stepfather) and he dosn't remember what they did to it!!! Any way I have a tierod connecting both spindles and then a steering arm coming off of the drivers side spindle that is connected via drag link to the steering box, the boxs pitman arm drops from the side of the fram and is straight up and down, the shaft exits the frame perpindicluar to it. Do you know if my set up should contain a drag link to the tierod like yours? I like the set up your using and if so I will probably do something similar. So basically I guess what I'm asking is, is that original componets except the box, or did you fabricate all of it?
Tongie - I printed you last response to show my Husband last night (he doesn't do computers).
Steve said that everything in the front that you can see on that photo is stock except for the steering box/pitman arm, disk brakes, shocks and sway bar. According to the books we have, '41 was the last year they put the single springs in.
Our steering box & arm are from a 1976 Cutlass. We were limited to a 1976-78 box from a Buick or an Olds not only because of the space issue, but also for this particular pitman arm. Soooo, it sounds like we probably don't have your answer.
Take a look at the specs on our frame in my gallery and I believe "alittle40" has more detail specs in his gallery. Steve thinks you may have more space up front than we do and that your setup may be more that of the 1946/1947 model trucks. Maybe flip through the 46/47 galleries and see if any of them are close to your's so you know who to ask.
Good luck on your search and maybe one of the 46/47 guys will pipe in and assist you.
Tom - I'll check with Steve tomorrow (8/12/02). He'll know what we still have and what kind of shape it's in. I'll either post a response tomorrow night or the following.
Tom - I checked with Steve & yes we still have the orig. steering box, column, shaft and steering wheel. He said he cut the shaft about 4-6 inches above the steering box and tore out the key assembly in order to get it out. The box and column are in good shape. I believe the steering wheel was cracked when we got it & is still attached to the column or shaft (whatever it is it attaches to) cause he couldn't figure out how to seperate the two. It was also missing the horn piece.
He said you could have it all for $100 plus shipping if you want it. If not - no problem, it ain't eatin' any hay.
E-mail me if you want it and we'll discuss arrangements.
Its been quite awhile since I posted and just about as long since I put any real work into the 42, But I found some time and am back on track. I asked about your steering box awhile back. Can you tell me how it mounted to the frame? Did you have to modify the old frame or weld in a bracket. I know you got alot of stuff from Chassis Engeneriing did they make the adapter? Please let me know so I can locate my new box and get it mounted
