My 6.0 starts just fine and runs just fine, most of the time. However, if the truck is cold (or I'm at high altitude i.e. above 9,000') and it's the first start up of the day, the truck just does not want to move. I can floor it and it just won't go anywhere. White smoke from tailpipe during this. Sometimes this may last for 30 or 40 seconds, then hold on, the truck then takes off like a banchi. Real embarrassing when you pull into the street to leave in the morning then can't go anywhere (and dangerous too). Then everyone you just blocked in stares at you for 30 seconds trying to figure out what you're doing. Then the truck takes off and spins tires and makes everyone really mad.
My questions are why? and how do we fix it?
Background: Truck has current flash (06e17) and the injectors buzz after shutdown. No codes. Techs have been throwing parts at it for years. New egr's, ebp, icp, flashes, hpop stuff, turbo tubes, and it is currently in the shop to have 8 new injectors.
That is exactly what mine started doing this past summer. I was 1000 miles from home so I called my service dept. where I bought the truck and they said it was the turbo vanes sticking just keep driving it until I get home. Upon returning three weeks later I took it in and they replaced the turbo and that was the end of my problem which was identical to yours. I also have a 2004 F-250 XLT.
Update:
Got the truck back last night from the dealer. Y-pipe is ok. All 8 injectors replaced and egr cleaned. This am, truck started fine, no rough idle like before, yet it still wouldn't move. Stuck in the street again, this time with a bunch of snow on the streets too. Luckily its Saturday and there was no traffic. This morning's temperature was 34F.
now, when you say it would not move, what do you mean. was the engine running like it should. was it like a tranny issue. i cannot remeber who posted someting similar to what you are describing but i dont know if they ever got it fixed. the user on here was complaining about someting very similar if i am not mistaken. why dont you start a new thread about wont pull off in snow and see what happens. i know the user said something about snow and not moving.
Engine sounds fine and runs fine, it just won't produce any power beyond idle for a little while. Not like tranny problem because the engine doesn't even try to make power. More like the turbo not turning on or a sensor not telling the engine that I've hit the gas pedal. This doesn't just occur in the snow, it occurs anytime when the temps are a little low or I'm at high altitudes.
One tech advised me to clean the iat2 sensor. So I did. I will try again in the morning and advise. If it doesn't work I will try to disconnect the maf and see if that changes anything.
I know the techs here know a lot more about this than me, but have they checked the turbo and whether or not the vanes are sticking? Like I said before, your description of what's happening is exactly what mine was doing. Ford replaced the turbo and the problem was gone.
My truck does the same exact thing every time it is cold out if you figure it out would love to hear your solution seeing if I bring mine into the dealer I might not see it for a week and I have to have my truck for plowing can't be without it for days on end...
my 2004 has done this since day one, when its cold , i live at 7000 ft , was told that it is the pcm programing to protect the engine till its warmed up enough to circ the oil properly.
I have an 05, but that doesn't sound like a valid reason. It's been cold here, low 20's to below 0. I haven't had an issue with it needing to warm up before it will go.
