I know that this question has probably been posted before but I couldn't find anything on a search. I have an '05 Super Duty Crew Cab 4x4 with manual hubs and floor 4x4 selector and the issue that I have is if I have the hubs in the locked position and the truck in two wheel drive I still get a clunking noise when I make a sharp turn. I guess the question I have is is this normal all of the trucks I've had prior to this one had the ESOF and thus the auto hubs.
Yes, you will get a bit of binding, clunking and steering feedback when your front hubs are locked and you are making a sharp turn (steering wheel against the lock). That is normal.
If you get a loud grinding type noise, then you need to look at your front end.
I lock my hubs if I think there may be a need for 4 wheel drive, or if I am going off road for any length of time. That way, if I need 4x4 all I have to do is engage the transfer case.
You only need to be stuck once, with muddy water covering your hubs, to learn this lesson.

I was just making sure he didn't leave them locked all the time it sucks to wear stuff out before you need to.
Hookd - I do not normaly leave the hubs locked, the other day we were supposed to get some bad weather so I locked them when I pulled out of my driveway and when I pulled into a parking on my trip I noticed the "clunking" noise when I turned into the lot and into a parking space.
I was just checking man I've seen it before. Redford hit it on the head though when turning you hear all sorts of noises and can normally feel it binding in the corners just try and make wider turns when locked in
Sounds normal to me, thats just the bind in the steering knuckles. Just try not to make any sharp turns, as your not doing your outbound u-joints any justice.
redford: what is the loud grinding noise? I just experienced it yesterday. I was thinking maybe a broken hub, or a hub that wasn't fully engaged. Ball joints were replaced 6 months ago. Thanks, sorry for hijacking.
The grinding noise is the outter u joint, or the hub. But most likey the outter u joint. Look at it see if you can move side to side at all, or if there is any rust on the end caps.

So you understand why they are clunking even though the transfer case is in 2wd the hubs being locked the front wheels are driving that axle and using more fuel also.
