Choke Stepdown Linkage Question

I have a Carter 1bbl on my '80 I6. I have a Haynes manual, but it doesn't seem cover this problem.

My choke closes when cold AND the idle step mechanism goes to the "high speed" step.

Three "well placed" depressions of the pedal and it fires right up EVERY TIME.

As it warms and runs for approximately a minute or so, I'll "touch" the accelerator to "hopefully" drop it to the next highest step BUT...

it immediately drops the idle down to it's lowest step.

The engine WILL idle but is still not warm enough to run properly. I must keep the gas "boosted" as I brake.

FINALLY , Can I adjust the choke rod (to the step piece) somehow so the step mechanism will not drop all the way down immediately?

It's not designed to operate that way is it?

Thanks in advance, Ken

As I recall, the link between the fast idle cam and the choke butterfly is fixed. If that is the case with yours, the choke is opening too quickly. Take a voltmeter and check the voltage at the connector on the elec choke housing. The feed for it is supposed to be off the back of the alternator and I believe it delivers 6 or 8 volts. If it is getting 12volts or more, someone has changed the wiring.

I think, (check me on this,) the terminal on the alternaor is the stator terminal, labeled "S"
