Starting issues.....still

Hey guys.

I posted a while back about my truck not starting in the cold. Well after looking over hundereds of replies and trying all of them I'm still having the same problem. Its cold out and for the first start of the day the truck will turn over strong but just wont attempt to start. As I turn the engine over whit smoke comes from the exhaust.

I have replaced the Gp's twice, both times with zd-11's, replaced the gpr twice with the napa recommended part. Ive tested all the gp's and wireing along with the relay and there definitly power getting to the gp's. If i do use a block heater it will help it will start fine.

Is the oil the problem, its due for a change and I believe 15-40 is in it now. Or could it be one of the sensors? I'm getting really tired of having to use ether every morning to get the truck to run...... Once i do start it and run it its fine for the rest of the day.

Thanks for the help

Ether is a big no no with diesels because the glow plugs will ignite it. Does the truck have a chip plugged into the pcm?

You might want to change out the oil to a 5-30 dyno or 5-40 synthetic oil for better cold starts.

when was the last time you changed your air filter? Also try disconnecting the O2 sensor on the right side of breather box. Not sure if this will help you.

15W-40 can be a little heavy for colder climates. Also, I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, but it is a diesel and they all have a harder time starting in the cold, more so than a gasser. If it's cranking over fast enough, your batteries should be okay, if you know your gp's and gpr are good, try leaving the key on for 45 seconds longer than the "wait to start" light goes out. If it's still cold starting, get yourself a timer for your block heater cord.

Thanks for the replies guys.

the air filter is reusable and was cleaned in the last 2 weeks, did it when i changed the gp's for the last time.

I was wondering on the oil allthough ive used the same oil the life of the truck and have never had this issue until this year??

Ive been leaving the key on as long as the relay is staying on so 1+ min, still truck reacts the same. Batteries, and starter were all tested monday and are all good. Along with the new gp's and gpr.

I use the ether after the failed attemp to start and the gp's are off, if its between walking 20mi to work and using the ether the ether will win lol. This is why I need to figure out the problem. I'm thinking its one of the sensors?!!? But after 3 months of fighting it I really dont know were to look?

The fact that you are using ether and have not had an explosion, makes me think your glow are NOT working. Have you check the wire harness out completely?

yes three times the most recently was a week ago, there is power to the plugs. I let the relay kick off which means the gp's are off so nothing too explode. Ive seen ether used many many times and never has a truck, dumptruck, tractor, or earthmover exploded so I'm a little unsure of the panic in using ether or wd-40 for that matter??

Change out your CPS. Make sure to get the International CPS. My truck did me in like that to not too long ago.

CPS = Camshaft position sensor. The International CPS I got was $130.00

I have a 97 F350 and in 97 there were two CPS available because of a split in that year in production. Make sure you get the right one. The part number is stamped on the end of the sensor if its the original one.
