The magnetic pickup (inductor) that is found on most timing lights is made to operate with the magnetic fields present in a wire that has 10000 volts or higher running in it. A rather high field strength compared to a 12 to 14 volt wire. IOW, it goes between the coil and the plug. With COP's, there is no high energy wire exposed, only a low energy wire, and this wire does not produce enough field strength (Gauss) to trigger the strobe.
Thanks for the replys & links . I'm going to find a "shade Tree " way To do this .
My X is 1500 mi. away, so I can't go out & play with it right now.Maybe because I can't go out & look @ the situation I don't see the complications.
Why can't a lead from the cop be hitched to a spare grounded plug ,the eng. started & the spark on the spare plug or the lack of it observed ?
It might work. It sure will with any old time engine. I don't know if it could damage the COP, though. The computer wil probably have a fit while you are checking it this way.
A scan tool will report a misfire in a cylinder. That is how we usually figure this one out.
I go way out in the Utah Mts & want to be able to fix the X so I can get back home in a breakdown. I could buy a tow truck for what it costs to get towed out. I carry emergency tools & the spares to do it. Bring home the Biggest pieces Dad always said .
you would have to have lots of cops all die at the same time in order to not bring it out. mine is back to running on 9 again, i just have to hook the puter back up to it to find out what one is missing now.
I don't know how much power 9 cyl. produce @ 10,000 - 11,000' MSL . I'm glad to hear you can limp home on 9 , if it's flat or downhill. But that's why I carry spare's , Factory Manuals ,ect. Usually my spares are used to get some other poor soul lost in the wilderness back to civilization .
to be honest unless you knew you were on 9 or even 8 at times you wouldn't really know it. i can feel when i have a miss but it just has a few little stutter spots in the rpm range and my fuel mileage goes down about 2mpgs
