I feel your pain. I too am in Canada and we have had -40F in November this year. My truck....plugged in in didn't start. Well in my case I found out I had 3 bad glow plugs. Don't know how it happened, but it did. after I got that fixed, it starts ok, but does not heat up....well not enough. I find that anything in the 0 and under range I have to plug it. It will start if it sits only a few hours....max 3. but then again...here in the Yukon most business have outside plugs so you can plug your vehicules in winter.
I say....fix your GF's tranny problem and drive that in winter if you can't plug your truck in.
