I have a 1990 bronco and it runs and drives fine, when I start it in the morning the oil pressure right were it should be. but after it warms up the oil pressure goes up and down, someone told me it was the oil pump, but I think if the oil pump was bad the pressure would go up and down when you frist start it as well.
Do you have an aftermarket gauge? They are much more accurate than the stock gauges, and they will show alot more pressure fluxations. Normally, a cold engine will have higher oil pressure until it warms up, and then the pressure will rise and fall with the speed of the engine.
Cold oil will give a higher pressure reading. As it warms up, it will lose pressure. Completely normal. How's about posting what PSI you are running at in idle, and through a few different RPM's? The we should be able to tell you if the oil pump is working well or not.
It the gauge is going up and down with out you changing the RPM's then I would say your guage is shot. If your really concerned do what Kemicalburns suggested.
yeah the stock gauge definatly sucks. mine did the same thing and stupid me jumped the gun and put in a brand new high volume pump. not a horrible decision to be sure the pump wasn't bad but i'm now leaking around the oil pan gasket. but i suppose that if its not one thing its another
I had a truck of another brand (starts with G ends with C) and the stock guage would go up and down all the time. I carried (actually drove it) it back up to the dealer where I bought it and was told this was normal. I insisted they fix it. They installed another guage and it still did the same thing.
My dad still drives that truck, when the trans isnt out, and it still does that. But we've never had an oil issue other than that... Odd.
I hate to throw in some bad news, on my 302, (the motor I just pulled) had the same problem. At driving speeds, oil pressure was normal, at idle, check engine would come on and off as pressure fell and rose. I put on a mechanical gage, did the same thing...it was the cam bearings. I hope it is just the gage...the mechanical will tell you the story.
