Does anyone know whether my 1978 F250 would've had an emergency brake switch hooked up to the brake warning light? I just had to put the truck through a government safety inspection and they stated that this is required? I looked underneath the dash, but I could not see any switch that should be activated if the E-brake is engaged nor any spare electrical connectors in the area that would indicate a missing switch. Any help would greatly be appreciatted. Thanks
No it doesn't and it wasn't a requirement back in 78
Tell him you will know it would be on because the truck wouldn't move and you can see the pedal down in ON position as unlike others it stays down when applied......
That's better than a light that the bulb could be out.
does the inspector mean a brake system warning light? This it has, it comes on for a second when you turn the key on to start the truck and is not connected to the emergency brake
Yes, the brake system warning light is working. It lights up when you start up the truck and then goes out, but the inspector thinks that the same light should light up if the emergency brake is pushed on. I personally have my doubts and I guess I will have to produce something to convince him otherwise.
Ford offered an dealer installed accessory Emergency Brake Warning Light Kit for years...beginning back in the 50's. You set the parking brake, a red light would come on, and it would go off when the p/b was released. there was no audible alarm.
Check ebay, the basic Ford Number for the kits was 15A851. I may be able to run down the individual parts, but the books no longer list the kits. this was SOP when the books were updated.
I would try taking it to a different inspection station if possible. Sounds like he's trying to be a PITA. Most places around here (NC) do a VERY basic safety inspection. What state are you in, by the way.
