painting brass
I have a 223 in a 63 which I have been cleaning up over the winter. I removed, cleaned and /or painted almost everything under the hood. I steel wooled the radiator reservoir and it came up gleaming brass. I know the originals were painted black but I like the look of the brass. Can any one tell me the reason these were painted and will leaving it as is cause any problems?

Probably just painted it to cover up flaws and to match the rest of the engine compartment. The brass will tarnish/dull rather quickly and require regular polishing (also a good reason to paint it). POR 15's Glisten PC is a clearcoat that is formulated for polished surfaces like brass and aluminum... I don't know how well it will hold up on a hot radiator but a clearcoat would be the route I'd take if I wanted to keep it shiny. Leaving it unpainted will not hurt the radiator's performance, asside from a little corrosion which, again, clearcoat should prevent.
