When I change my filter I fill the bowl with Diesel Kleen, any diesel fuel addative would work.

Once a year I'm sure would be fine, It depends how many miles you drive & how often you change your oil. If you change it every 5k then doing the fuel filter every other oil change would be fine. If you run a bypass filter & have extended your oil changes out to 10k then I would stay with once a year or every oil change.
I have read that the fuel filter is good for up to 30k but that seems way to long in my book. But I am a bit **** about my maint.

OK, guys... finished my first fuel filter change. Gotta hand it to you guys... following your tips and suggestions, everything went perfect first time out of the box. Haven't leaked a single drop of fuel.

I did something a little different though, being the tightwad that I am about wasting stuff. I didn't want to waste the fuel that drained out of the fuel filter bowl, but it was nasty with lots of tiny black stuff in it. Also didn't want to use my DK so I could keep it all for use during fill-ups. Sooo.... I used about 6 coffee filters to filter out the black grime, put the filtered fuel back in the bowl, and voila!! Everything started up perfectly and has continued to run that way ever since.

Do you guys typically see that your filters have turned black by trash contaminants from the fuel? I really wasn't expecting that, and don't quite know what to think about it for now, either. Somebody make me feel better and tell me that this is normal, OK?

Perfectly normal. Black if you run her for a while. BTW, a quart of diesel costs about .60c. You will use about 1/4 of that. May be a bit tight for $180 plus a piece injectors. Think about that. Other than that you are doing fine. It will all go through, especially with a return system.

Understand completely. My plans are to get a gallon of diesel and just keep it on hand around the house for such things as this. It took way too long to filter that dirty fuel through those coffee filters for me to want to be in that situation again. Thanks again for the tips.
