last night i got my dptuner so today i installed it. i took it out for a test drive and then it happened....i got on it a few times and then there was a fast clanking sound coming from under the hood. is honestly sounded like the turbine wheel was hitting the housing. the the SES light came on so i slowley drove it 3mi back to my appartment. the truck ran normal the entire way home, normal EGT's and oil press. i left it running after i parked it and walked aroung the truck. everything looked and sounded normal. so i reved the truck to about 1500rpm's and then i could hear the noise again. i clearly was coming from the turbo.
i pulled the intake tube off and i could wiggle the turbo shaft ALOT!! so pulled the turbo off and took it appart and there is about 1/8'' of play in every direction. from looking at the turbine wheel it almost looks loke something went through it (glow plug tip?). bottom line it i need a new turbo and i am going to have to sell my tuner to help pay for it. this really sucks!
sorry to hear that...that really sucks..selling your tunes isnt going to be easy..its custom made for you computer..you will need to find some one with the same computer..look on e-bay for a turbo...or maybe some one here has a stock one they would like to get rid of....good luck ...
That sucks. Keep the DP-Tuner and get your turbo rebuilt. I wonder if Tadd can rebuild it for you. Elite Diesel is in Pueblo, might want to give them a call and see if they can help you out.
thanks pocket for telling me about elite, i just got off the phone with him and he has a few rebuilt BB turbos that have about 30,000miles on them for $750.
unfortunitaly my wife is about to kill me over my truck so that wont happen, but he sait to bring my turbo down to him tomorrow and he can rebuild it. i guess i have to leave it stock for a while longer.
Ryan, I think he said the turbine wheel is damaged. That will render the turbo non-rebuildable since that wheel is welded to the shaft. I unfortunately have first hand knowledge of that. Luckily I had a spare turbo to rebuild.
Edit: on the other hand, if it's the compressor wheel (intake side) that's damaged, and not the turbine wheel (exhaust side), then the turbo is completely rebuildable. Cookie88 send me a link to where you can purchase a stock compressor wheel. PM him. Or, you could replace it with a wicked wheel.
Check eBay for some old stock turbo's that you can rebuild. Oh, and send a PM to RAMPAGE_F350. I'm pretty sure he's still got a stock turbo he would sell, which you would want to rebuild. The rebuild kit's can be had for about $100 on eBay, and it's a piece of cake to rebuild them.

If its really that big of an issue right now, and sounds like it is, just getting going again doesnt necessarily mean rebuilding what broke. I know you can get a used turbo from a parts yard here for $200. It isn't new, it probably came from someone who upgraded, but hey, it works. Not the high speed option, but functional.
Someone else emailed me about my stock turbo yesterday, he has not responded back to my email. So, yes I still have it. I was hoping it might come in handy for someone on this forum. PM me for details.

Rebuilding the stock turbo should fix the problem though. With a rebuild kit, you get new bushings, new thrust bearings, new thrust bearing plate, and new ring seals. That's all the parts that should be worn out causing the excessive play. Mine was only not rebuildable because the exhaust wheel had been damaged.

i am in that boat. the turbine wheel is wasted. so i guess i need a new shaft? the wheel rubbed my brand new 1.0 turbine housing. bummer, hopefully i can still use it.
tomorrow i am heading down to elite diesel, he is going to look at my housing and turbo to see what we can do. hopefully that will work out.
