delo 400, api cj ?
(delo 400) for my '06 6.0. The box now reads delo 400 LE
(low emission) with a api rating of cj. The old rating was
ci4 plus. Does anyone know the dif ?
This will make for a healthier enviroment. The new diesel oil rating API CJ4 is for the low emmission engines.
Chevron will still manufacture the old Chevron Delo 400. I buy mine locally at the bulk plant.
I using the Chevron Delo 400 on my older engine (1975- 390's, 1978- 302 cid, 1980- 400 cid). And plan on making the change to the DELO 400 LE at a latter time.
I'm sure you can use the new Chevron Delo 400 LE on your 06 diesel engine. Maybe you can make the request to Costco to stock the older diesel oil (Chevron Delo 400 ).
Go to "Product Data" and select "country" and then bip on the DELO 400 LE API CJ4,
http://www.chevrondelo.com/
It contains 0.12% phosporus and 0.13% zinc.
FAQ mentioned it good for old and new engine, here the pdf file,

Comparing CJ4 to CI4+, sulfur, ash, and phosphorus are reduced, along with a tighter volatility spec.
From the data sheets,
Zinc only went from .148 to .13, hardly a big deal.
TBN did drop from 12.2 to 9.6, so the ash went down. If you still run high-sulfur off-road diesel, that could be a problem, otherwise not. For those of us who use Delo 400 in gas engines, no problem at all.

The anti scuff additives were taken out of automotive oils a while back and all engines went to a roller lifter cam design in 2004. if you run the new oils in an old motor your cam and lifters may not last long.
For Y blocks which have solid lifter cam design most people were running the shell rotella (heavy duty deisel/auto oil) which had a very high amount of anti scuff additives. starting in January 2007 it was mandated that the oil companies change their oils to accomodate diesel trucks using catalytic converters so the anti scuff addivives were removed from the heavy duty oils.
If you have a flat tappet motor be it hydraulic or solid, use the oils with a CI4 rating, "NOT THE CJ4"
Please spread the word because many people who do not know this will ruin their engines, thats what the goverment wants because they are trying to get all the old stuff off the roads and into the crushers.
