My 2005 PSD has had a faint tapping noise since new...I now have 18,000 miles on it. The noise sounds a little like lifter noise and is noticable while driving, or at idle; it seems to be most noticable when the engine RPMs have leveled off and I'm cruising. When the engine is cold, the noise it at its worst. I had it to the dealer several times and they said, "Sounds like a diesel." I don't agree. The last time I took it in, they replaced the high pressure oil pump because of a bulletin Ford had issued--noise is still there. I'm hoping someone here can help with this as I've had it with the dealer's "tech" telling me he doesn't hear it, or something lame like, "It's just injector noise.". I understand diesels are noisy, but this is not injector noise. Thanks for any help.
That's a difficult one to diagnose without actually hearing your PSD. Mine makes what I would describe as tapping sounds and it does sound like mechanical lifters out of adjustment. Diesels do make alot of racket. Since they replaced the HPOP that's eliminated from being the issue. Have you heard other 6.0 PSD's idling and running?
I haven't had an opportunity to drive, or listen to, another PSD 6.0. I'm thinking of recording the noise and converting it to a .wav file that others can listen to. It's actually a fairly faint noise compared to the rest of the noise made by the engine, but it just seems abnormal and that bothers me. Thank you for the reply.
I'm just throwing out possibilties. When the hpop is replaced is the fitting replaced also. If it's part of the replacement disregard the link below. Mike
Here is TSB...
Metal Tapping Noise from Rear of Engine:
Excursions built after 1-10-05 and 2005/06 F-SuperDuty may have a metal tapping noise from the rear of the engine on decel or light acceleration, or under loads when the high oil pressure is at higher levels. This may be due to a damaged/improperly fitting HP oil pump output quick connect fitting. To diagnose, you will need a scan tool with active command capability. Command the IRP duty cycle to 45% and listen at the high pressure oil pump cover with a stethescope as the engine speed is increased to 2800 RPM. If the noise is louder on the pump cover than on other parts of the engine, the pump cover will need to come off to inspect and replace the fitting. Broadcast Message 5511.
