Rear differential noise

Almost sounds and feels like a bad u-joint but when I get down to the side and look under it with my son gently rocking and rolling forward and backward it seems like the play is in the rear. I jacked up the rear and pushed and pulled a little on the tire and it seems like you can get up to the point where the rear should be stopped and solid and then when you apply a little more pressure to the tire you can feel a tiny little bit of play inside the rear like an axle is pushing down and moving a little side-to-side because a bearing is shot and not keeping the axle perfectly centered and supported. If this is the case can it be taken apart and the bearings replaced and then put back together without having to set up the ring and pinion again with backlash and pre-load and all that fine tuning? I'm going to open it up later today and see what we have. I want to get it before it explodes!!!! Let me know if anyone else has found this problem and what I am looking at to remedy it.

pull off the rear diff cover and check out the spider gears. jack up the back end {block the front tires and use jackstands safty first} and turn the wheels till you can see the spider gears. then put the truck in N and move the drive shaft back and forth and see if you can see those spider gears freplay at all or anything that has slop in it. and give the RG an inspection while you have the cover off also.

Yes, the axles can be pulled and the bearings replaced without affecting the ring and pinion setup.

axle bearings should giving your a groaning noise down the highway and is speed related, I thing you need a special socket for those axle bearing nuts but cant remeber.

after thats repaired you you still have a noise, pull your drive shaft off, make sure you dont have a siezed u-joint. You could have no play but a siezed one will make alot of noise as well.
