hey guys , ive been seeing that alot of the folks on here have the new flash... not sure of the number? , but its the one that cycles the injectors. should i call my local dealer and get it?
"Flash" is merely a term that is commonly used in reference to updating the programming on a vehicle computer (PCM/ECM).
The update that the original poster is referencing was a change to the programming which cycles the injectors for a couple seconds after you turn off the engine. This purges the oil from the injectors to help keep the oil from baking inside there. Think of this like heating up a cast iron skillet nice & hot, throwing in a couple tablespoons of butter, and then just turning off the burner. Even though the heat generation is not there anymore, the components are still hot & will cook the fluid.
Any Ford dealership can update the programming, and it should be free if you are within your warranty period. I am not sure what the policy is after warranty expires.

Depending on when you bought your truck, you may not need it. Mine is an 06 that was build in May, so I did indeed need the flash. I found out about it thru this website and then got a recall notice in the Mail shortly there after. During my 10K oil change, the dealer asked me if I wanted the flash done. I declined cause the truck has been running very well. They said no problem for now but at some point in time, they would have to do it based on emissions regulations, etc. Anyway, I was told by a different dealer that it would really improve cold weather starts, etc so at 15,000 i had it done. To be honest, I haven't noticed anything - Good or Bad so...
For something that has major legal ramifications, a recall would be sent out. Chaffed wiring harnesses causing vehicle fires would be grounds for a recall. As most flashes have a relatively minor impact, they are usually just sent to the dealerships as service bulletins/advisories (forget what they are called specifically).
Some dealerships are pretty good at checking for any applicable service bulletins & performing that work whenever you bring your vehicle in for service. Other dealerships may require a bit of prodding to get them to do the research into what service bulletins there are for your vehicle & what has/has not already been done to it.
If you want a specific update, I would suggest either doing a drive-in or scheduling the appointment with your dealership.
