i can not get my 1991 f.150 4x4 with the 300 into 4 low,
the problem as stated above
there is something broke somewhere, one day i had the wheels turned to the left, and i was turning the truck around in the driveway, and i step on the gas, its revving a little, porbably 1200 rpm to guess, doesnt move, give it a little more gas, it goes, the 4x4 stick tilts toward the passenger side, the truck jerks, i mean jerks when this happens and the exhaust broke off at the 2nd catylytic converter, and when i say the 4x4 stick moves, i mean moves, so can anyone tell me whats broke, id appreciate it
It sounds like you might have a broken motor mount by the way you are describing how much it moves around. If you can't get it into low range the shifter probably needs to be lubricated. Had that happen on my 95 F 350. Lubed it up it worked good. Still have to lube it once in a while when it gets stiff. My shifter has to be pushed down to get it into low. Is yours like that, or the type that has to be moved to the side?
mine on the picture on the shifter shows it has to be moved to the side, i put it in N and got out and tried to pull it, not ripping it off pulling it but i gave it a tug and it wouldnt go, it goes into high
I would climb underneath and see what the linkage looks like. Maybe have someone else try moving the shifter while you look. I am not too sure how that type of linkage works. It is different than the one on my truck. I had an 88 Bronco that had the same kind as yours, but I never had any problems with it. Maybe someone else will come on with more info on your shifter.
Just another thought. Did you put the trans in neutral before you try to put it in Low? I have to put mine in neutral and sometimes have to be rolling a little to get it in Low. I don't use Low very much so I forget to mention it before. If you have an owners manual it should have the procedure to put the transfer case in Low. Might even be on your visor.
Your tranny needs to be in neutral, not park, when going to 4low. When your truck wasn't moving like that, did you have the 4wd engaged on dry pavement? If you did... shame on you! You'll break your drivetrain that way.
