How hard is the rear fuel tank to drop on my 86 F150 155"wb,ext cab long bed 2wd, efi 302, IT HAS ABOUT 12GALLONS still in it????
I took it on the hiway the other day and the front tank it ran great, the i switched to the rear, it was fine for about a minute then it backfired out the intake, and started loosing power, so I backed off the gas and it ideled fine, with a slight miss, got back on the road and pulled it into drive(took out of OD) and it was fine the it started again, seems to be sensitive to throttle pressure,NOT RPM. So When I got back I dumped a half a bottle of redline fuel system trearment and the miss seem to go away, I will road test it sunday again with fuel cleaner,
I've taked to autozone parts guys that SWARE it's the fuel pump, but I thought electrics worked or they did not. I was thinking bad gas.
Thanks,
Dustin
unhook the filler neck from the truck, support the tank with a floor jack.
(I would suggest placing a piece of 2 x 12 lumber between the jack and the tank to avoid any possible damage to the tank.)
unbolt the lower straps.... or grind the bolts off if they are too rusty.
SAFTEY NOTE>>>> you are working on a half full gas tank.....do not torch the bolts off.....and only use the grinder as a last resort!!!!!!
lower the tank 1-2 inches, just enough to get your hands in above it to unhook the electrical, fuel line, and return fuel line if its EFI.
then lower the tank the rest of the way once everything is free....
From the description of what happened I would also say bad gas.... have you ever used the rear tank before....did you just get the truck....any other info we should be aware of.....
I would almost plan on having to replace the tank if you live anywhere that they use salt on the road.... as said before...they like to rust out on top.
Agree with others about dropping the tank. It isn't that hard as long as you can get the bolts out. 2 People will be a help as the gas will slosh around as you get it down and make it want to scoot off the jack.
As for it either working or not, on mine the pump worked but the little hose that connects the pump to the feed line had rotted out so it was sucking air intermittantly. The pump could be running but either have the hose problem or just be worn and not pumping enough fuel.
Another possibility is your selector valve isn't switching over completely. On our trucks, it switches from pressure, not electrical relay. That is what makes troubleshooting our trucks hard since if the rear in tank pump isn't working well, the selector may not switch all the way but if the pump IS working, the selector may be worn and sticking. I changed all my stuff to new and still have a problem only when it is very hot outside. I haven't been able to get it to do it at home where I can T-shoot it and now that it is winter, it works fine all the time.
I would drop the tank, inspect the hose, then if it is good, put a pressure pump on the outlet and dip the feed into a jar and check the pressure.
Just an FYI, gas weighs about 7lbs per gallon. So 12 gallons of gas add approx 84lbs to the tank. The empty tank doesn't weigh than much, maybe 30 lbs, so you're looking at a little over 100lbs.
No, I've had the truck sense 2-03' so about 4 years. I run the front tank mainly and put gas and stabil in the tanks (f/r) and start it once a week and give it aleast a 10 mile drive. i have gone longer periods of time maybe 4 months just on the front tank. I feel bad, I hurt one of my babies. i hope it is just bad fuel, I put the Red line fuel system cleaner and will run the rear tank dry to see it it gets better. When I did add the red line it seem to make a miss it had on the rear tank disappear.
