The best Engine and Tranny
Thanks for the input....
Pretty much cured me from looking at the new ones....
Find one you like, buy the extended warranty. If you keep it beyond that, be prepared for an expensive repair now and then...
Half tons, what do you want to do with it? Reliable daily driver with good mileage? Need to tow something? The 5.4L is arguably the best half ton towing engine, lots of low end grunt, the Dodge Hemi has lots of high end power, but sucks at towing basically anything, and the Chevy 5.3L falls right about in the center, can pull good, but will spank the 5.4L for speed.
Diesels: Powerstroke, great pulling...lack of available power. The Duramaxes and Cummins both have a huge aftermarket following. I'd have to reccommend the Duramax (having driven and worked on a 2003 PSD), lots of power and fairly reliable. No comments on the Cummins, as no experience with it. Good engine by any account though.
And as for the plug issue with the 5.4L, it's not a problem if you torque them to spec. Period.

It's also the head design, but when properly torqued and checked periodically, it presents no problems.
