Hi, new to fourm but not to Fords.Recently purchased a 2006 150 with tow package.Need to install brake controller.Last vehicle was a 2002 explorer and it took me a week to locate factory connector behind glove box.Does any know where the plug is on 150 ,salesman said there is one and I allways trust salesmen!
Do you still have the wiring harness that came with the truck? My 04" had one in the bottom of the glove box. With the harness was a short description of where the plug is located. Near the steering wheel column underneath the dash. Hope this helps.
Plus previous post in the glove box should be a relay you have to put in the fuse box under the hood to make trailer brakes work was like this in my 04 doubt they have changed that part.
The plug is on the right side of the steering column. The relay mentioned earlier goes in the fuse panel on the passenger side below the glove box adjacent to door. I just did it this weekend.
I also have a 06 F150. It is as dcsmith stated above. It is not necessary to do, but you can see the connector easily if you remove the dash panel just below the steering column (two 7mm? screws), then remove the metal plate behind that (two more screws). You might find it easier to connect if you can see what you are doing (w/o being upside down under the dash).
Now I am confused. I have an 04 with the tow package. I bought a controller, and plugged it into the port below the steering wheel, and everything seems fine. I did nothing with any relay or fuse? Am I missing something?
I didn't put mine in either. I understood that is was for charging a battery or supplying 12v to the trailer. I don't know that to be true. But mine works good without it too.
I have not used mine yet, but the indicators all worked appropriately on mine too before plugging in the relay. I subsequently realized (read instructions) that I was supposed to plug in the relay to make the brakes function correctly, so I did. Never actually tried it with the trailer otherwise. Not sure of the exact function of the relay, but I just do what I am told.
I believe so. Will try to verify tonight as I still have the instructions that came with the pigtail. I am sure I did not just "figure it out." Not that smart.
I found my instruction sheet. I had never looked into that plastic bag with the factory harness, as my controller came with a harness specifically for the F150, so all I had to do was plug it in and go. I see the relay now. I guess I will plug it in. It looks as if the relay allows a charge to go to the trailer battery for charging. Didn't know that was possible, but that's what it seems to be for?
That brings up another question. Why would a trailer need a trickle charger if the truck supplies a charge current such as with this relay install (if that is the case)? Anybody have a good source for an inexpensive onbard trickle charger?
I used to install hitches and hitch accessories for U-Haul. The relay is for the 12 volt power lead on your 7 way connector. Generally this can be used for interior lights or a refrigerator on a tow behind pop up or camper. It can also be used to charge a battery on the trailer that in turn can be used for a break-away safety brake system or numerous other 12+volt systems on the trailer.
