Yeah, if you have a battery on your trailer you are going to want to install the relay. The power lead replaces the need for a trickle charger.

Tooldad: I am not sure if we are all ont he same page here the charging circuit is for the battery on a travel trailer for inside lites etc. if your brake away switch is hooked to that you are fine but if we are talking a small utility trailer the breakaway battery will not be charged if you are using a 4 pin plug just for lites!!!!!

04 FX Lineman - I have the tow package with 7 pin connector and am using a 7pin to six pin adapter to a 6x16 tandem axle "landscape" trailer with dual brakes and brakeaway brakes. Will have to reconfirm the adapter connections, but believe power is being delivered to the battery (have not yet confirmed, new setup).

Ye, exactly correct 4 way will not charge battery. The 7 way has 2 different posts that are powered by 12+. One is for battery charge and the other is generally referred to as AUX. POWER. A 7 way to 6 way adapter should include one of those poles to the trailer supplying it with 12+ to the breakaway. Note- 7way to 4way adapter does not include 12+, if you are wondering. Hope this helps....

Why wouldn't they just put the relay in the fuse panel in the first place? If someone did not have a trailer hooked up, it wouldn't hurt anything. Looks like to me that they would just put the relay in at the factory. At any rate, i plugged mine in.

on the few F150 out there that don't have a 7way wiring install it would leave live 12+ wire at back of truck- plus I am sure there are dealers out there charging .5 hours labor to install relay.

Last week I purchased a '05 F150 w/tow pkg.
Today I had the brake controller installed. The
mechanic pointed out that I needed the relay,
so I stopped by the nearest Ford dealer to purchase
the relay. The parts man said he had no way to identify
the part number for the relay I needed.
My question - Can anyone on this forum give me the part
number of this relay and tell me where it can be purchased?
Thanks,

jbrist

Mine plugged into an open slot between 2 existing ones. I think I remember that the number on the trailer relay was the same as the 2 existing ones, but I will check. If so, you can get the number off of one of the existing ones!

Thanks goatdriver,
The other five relays are all the same-
5C3T-4B192-AA P6STD

So I guess I'll try to find the same relay
as the others.
Thanks again,
jbrist
