Glad your not hurt!!! I also think Rangers are the safest trucks on the road. I rolled my new '99 back in 99 and she was totalled. Only 2500 miles on it. Cost $16,000. Bought a new one, still driving it today. 93,000 still on the original tires. (honest)
it was my understanding that "totaled" ment that the cost of repair exceded the current value of the vehicle, maybe its all in the eyes (or opinion) of the insurance company.
The body shop told me the insurance company uses a value of 75 - 80% of the cash value of the truck. Then, the repairs have to exceed a certain percentage of that amount to be a total loss.
They told me the repair costs on mine were not even close to the total loss point.
Ok, I am slightly shocked at this point. The body shop started tearing into the truck this week. The frame repairs that they had estimated are not possible. They are replacing the entire frame. They will remove everything from the old frame and reinstall it on a brand new frame. That has brought the repair estimate up to over $12,000.
Does a body shop have the ability to completely rebuild a vehicle? And, what does this do to my warranty?

I guess I lack confidence that a couple guys at "Joe's" body shop have the ability to do everything correctly. Call me a skeptic, but I foresee endless "warranty" issues in the future.
My original damage estimate was $6800, the bodyshop told me the new frame is another $4000, plus $2600 for labor... that adds up to $13400. According to Edmunds.com, the current trade-in value is just under $19000. I can't imagine what a used car buyer would say if I tried to trade a vehicle with that amount of accident repairs.
State Farm says they don't consider it a "total" until it hits their number (they won't tell me what that number is). They "are watching the estimates and will forward it to their total loss unit if it hits the number".
Most insurance companys have some sort of "work quality" program. Check with them and see what their policy is. Also you may want to talk to them about "loss of vehicle trade in value". Now is the time to get it sorted out, before they get started. By all means if your not happy talk to them, and if need be talk to a lawyer.

Anymore 2nd or 3rd estmates are useless unless you are paying for the work yourself. Insurance company's go by there own numbers and pay on what there adjuster writes. The body shop may find more damage during the tear down and request a suppliment from the adjuster. ( I have been there & done that a couple times )
some insurance co's even have a list of body shops they use in a certan area.
Repairs usually come with aan as long as you own your truck warrenty on the repaires! at least the one I use does.
Ok, here is an update..... Got the truck back today.
The truck looks like new. I picked it up at 5:00pm and drove the 100 miles south to Omaha. I wonder if I should be concerned with a driveline vibration that is pretty noticeable at 60 MPH?
The total repair bill sits at $13,300. The shop said they have a few items to add on yet, probably a couple hundred more dollars.
Guess I can say I am driving a total "frame off" restoration. Too bad the restoration was on a 4 month old truck.
"Man", glad your ok, sure is a sharpe truck. If it's totaled, order one just like it, but get a manual tranny, then you'll know just how much fun they can be. I didn't read all the post, so if it's not totaled disreguard.

Nope, it wasn't totaled. It's all back together now. Just have to follow up about the vibration, I know that isn't normal. It sounds and feels similar to a U-Joint issue I had in an F150 a couple years ago.
Yeah, I really wanted a manual transmission. But, there were only about 4 Rangers within 200 miles when I bought it back in October. All of them were automatics. Ford wasn't offering the rebates or the 0% financing if I ordered an 07 then, so I just found the best truck I could find still in dealer stock.
