Yup. POR-15 is the way to go. Don't waste your time (or money) with the milky stuff sold in most auto parts stores. POR-15 forms a very hard (almost ceramic-like) surface and can even bridge small pin holes.
A few points to keep in mind when you use it:
1) Follow directions
2) sure enough, it DOES bond pretty quickly to your skin...and takes weeks to wear off
3) Make sure you don't apply it to areas you will later want to strip back to bare metal (it's quite resistant to sanding...grinding...etc)
4) it will bond the lid of the can to the can if you don't keep it absolutely clean; use a piece of Saran-wrap between the two when you re-seal after opening it.
Not sure if they've changed the composition of the newer stuff (I last used it ~ 6 yrs ago), but it supposedly changes appearance if exposed to daylight. I think it said it's just cosmetic...but you can top-coat with other paint (under certain conditions) if this bothers you.
there's a bunch of discussion/comparisons of this product as well as others in the paint&bodywork forum of this site. I purchase the rust encapsulator from Eastwood, but have not used it yet
I used the gas tank resealer kit to reseal my gas tank about 3 years ago. I probably didnt follow all the directions as far as making sure the tank was fully free of all scale and debris or maybe the tank was just too rusted out. It sealed some spots rather well and was very shiny and formed a hard-like ceramic type of surface you find on metal camping cups. Sort of. It was darker though. I'm having to buy a new one from one of the site sponsors. I also tried some of the rust sealer on the battery tray and recently found that it was peeling off. I probably didn't clean the surface enough either. I probably need to follow the directions and make sure if there are any doubts or questions to ask before using it again.
