OK my intermittent problem is getting better. Found no KOEO codes, didnt do running codes yet. Anywyas, found 7 and 8 wires crossed, moved them, did better for a while. Then put 92 gas in did a little better. Now, the times when it happens, the temp gauge is reading lower on the gauge, like between the N and O. The temp goes up to the M and A , it get s better. When the t-stat opens and the temp goes down, it seems to get worse. Any ideas?

Not having read your initial post what was your "original intermittent" problem?

my temp gauge has never even reached the o in normal in the heat of the summer.

usually just before or on the n.

this is in 3 years of driving.

It is cold here now, and the last two days the truck has been runnig like crap. It takes about 10 miles before it will run on what seems like all 8 cylinders, then it becomes intermittent again. Stumbles, misses, etc. Also, even when warmed up, it is still blowing visible "cold exhaust" when other warmed up cars are not. Is this a possible condition of the temp sensor (not for the gauge). WHere is this sensor located?

The gauge switch is just in front of the number 5 cylinder runner on the driver's side of the block. The computer Engine coolant Temperture sensor is in the mess below the throttle body on the heater hose housing above the thermostat. If the engine is at ambient temperture and that ambient temperture is below 40 degrees F then you should get a code on the KOEO codes saying that it is below range. Fordfuelinjection.com has the listing for the way to test this sensor without removing it. You will need access to a voltmeter that can read resistance in the kOhms range. Also, you should get a code on the KOEO test that says the Air Charge Temperture sensor is below range as well. That ACT sensor reads the temperture of the air in the intake manifold. It is located between the number 6 and number 7 runners and should be approxiamately the same resistance as the ECT sensor.

It does sound like you have a bad ECT sensor, it is telling the EEC Computer it is hot when the engine is cold (cool), so you would be getting a lean fuel mix when it should be rich. It is like trying to drive an older truck with the choke open while the engine is cold.
The ECT sensor is basically your automatic choke.
The visible "cold exhaust" is water vapor.
