Folks, I've just developed a problem with the tranny linkage of my 1975 F250 supercab. The trouble started when I pulled into my driveway, put the truck in park and it ran backwards into the street. I managed to man handle the linkage from under the hood to change the gear and get the truck into my garage. The problem now is that not only will it not go into any gear, but it will not start either. I've moved the linkage around manually through each gear, but cannot get it to start. Questions:
1. Is there a neutral shutoff switch somewhere?
2. Since there appears to be a disconnect between the linkage and the shifter arm, could something be broken?
3. Could it just be a simple fluid problem?
4. Or worse, could the whole linkage be shot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Thanks for the replies. To narrow the field a little, the shifter moves freely back and forth, however I am able to move the linkage at the lower connection to the steering column and it appears to work, so it would seem there is something broken in the lower end of the column.
In your first reply, you posted two pictures. At the top center of the first pic there's something attached to the center of the steering column. What is it? as I think that may be my problem. The tine attached to the shifter isn't making contact with the protruding rod.
Thanks
Also, how do I insert a pic in my posts? I tried but it didn't work.
The almost near the bottom of the column is where the shift fork locates it is attached to the shift rod on one end..the other end of the rod goes to the trans.
On that column rod there is a flattened area that slides thru a elongated hole on the shift fork.. then into the plastic retainer at the end.

If that elongated hole becomes "rounded out" from shifter misuse..the shifter doesn't have anything to actuate.
I've replaced the shift tube, plastic washer, shift collar and all the little pieces, and have it back together, however it still seems quite sloppy. Not as bad as it was before the new parts, but it doesn't quite select the gears like it's supposed to. Between 1 and 2 there is no resistance, the shifter just goes back and forth between them. I can feel the linkage picking up the gear at the tranny, but it doesn't feel right. I'll be trying it out tomorrow under power to see if it actually works, but if anyone has any ideas, it would be appreciated.
