It looked to me like he was agreeing with you, not digging at you.

The point has already been made but here is my two cents. In short order engine life depends on so much, maintenance, driver style, add ons, what the vechcle is used for, etc. So nobody can really say. As with the 7.3 it is a great motor that can take a lot of abuse. Some last almost unbelievable amount of miles some don’t. My first engine lasted 291,000 miles, lost a piston ring which in turn screwed up the cylinder walls and lost compression. Too soon in my opinion and I did regular maintenance but those things happen sometimes. After a short “bone headed” time with a 6.4 I am very happy to have sourced a low mileage 7.3 replacement and am back on the road payment free . Also a truck that I can pretty much tear down wherever I am at with the correct tools. And most importantly I can work on it myself.

So to sum it up even after my experience those miles wouldn’t scare me away if the rest of the truck checked out and appeared to be maintained in some fashion. But as we all know even buying a new truck can be somewhat of a gamble now days.

I hope she lasts a long long time for you if that’s what you decide to do.

Wait, you got rid of the 6.4 already? I mean, glad you're back, but that was short!

On edit: NVM....I got you confused with @afmedic LOL.....apologies

Yep, owned it 2 days short of a year and put $4,000 into it in that time frame. Time to go. It was insane fast and the creature comforts were very nice, and don’t get me started on how much I miss the crew cab. Not worth the wondering when it was gonna blow. Again these are just my takes. I know people have had success with there 6.4. Just wasn’t for me or my wallet. Just spending my time trying to get my ear retrained to the sound of a 7.3. Compared to the 6.4 the 7.3 even when healthy sounds like it’s ready to go at any moment.

You mean the 7.3 sounds almost like a real diesel?
Ever heard a DT466 or a Cat start on a cool morning, or under a full load?

I have not. I am sure it’s loud though. Just have to get my ear tuned back in. My wife’s grandfather was a mechanic in the Air Force and whenever he heard my truck he was like “hey shut it off and open the hood the guys still under there working”!!! Always got a chuckle out of that.

I might get shunned for saying this, but I’ve always kind of liked the sound of the 12 valve. Without a doubt though, a 7.3 with single shots is music to my ears.

The sound of a cummins is the one thing that could talk me into a Dodge. I know they were also available in Fords, but they're mega $.

466, I used to work at an International dealership and loved them too.

Thanks. I've been accused of misuse of punctuation, semicolons in particular, and run-ons. I'm also aware that I'm not well educated and assumed it might be a dig since I was knocking someone else's grammar while not being an 'authority' on it.

Fill me in...what is there to love about the DT466? We had them in our city units and to me that DT held the same meaning as it did when I was a teenager. They were slower than slow and IIRC there were a percentage of them that had serious problems before they had 100,000 miles on them.

I was only referring to their sound. I like the 7.3 PS, but much prefer the sound of a straight 6 diesel. The 466 isn't fast, but it's got a fair bit of grunt. Lightly loaded the 444 is faster.

Well, I've said it elsewhere, but on topic with the OP's question from many years ago, I'm now sitting at the following life point on my truck...

Approximately 301,000 miles (purchased in late 2006 w/ 114,000).
The OE equipment which is still ORIGINAL includes the following: HPOP, LPOP, injectors (including cups and o-rings), transmission (including TC and cooler), turbo (and wheel), rear end (3.75 LS), radiator, PS pump, steering gearbox, A/C (entire system), fan clutch, oil pan, VSM, entire body & bumpers, most electronics, and lots of other basic and little stuff which rarely goes awry.

Most of the other stuff has been "touched", some being simple wear and tear replacements, generally ahead of their typical breakdown points.

Just about the same story here. My theory is this. When the SD came out with the 7.3, diesel trucks were gaining huge popularity and were getting competitive. Ford engineering seemed to think of everything, and almost over build it, for that time period. Seems that way anyways. I remember looking at the first new SDs to hit the lot in my town and I just thought "WOW". I still kinda think that when I work on mine LOL.
