The white wire goes to the starter solenoid/relay. What the white wire does is retard the timing during starting so the engine turns over easier, especially on a hot day. So the white wire needs a 12 volt signal during cranking only. Hook it to the wire that triggers the solenoid to kick in that comes from the neutral safety switch.
You should also have another wire going from your solenoid to the ignition coil + terminal. Your old solenoid should have this extra small terminal called "I". What this does is bypass the ignition resistor in the harness to give the ignition coil a full 12 volts during cranking for a hotter spark. This makes it start much quicker, especially during cold weather. Make sure you are still using the original coil hookup that was for the points, since the old points system used a resistor or resistance wire for the coil. If you have run a new wire to the coil with no resistor, go buy one and install it. If you don't have the resistor, the ignition box and the coil will run hot.
