86 150 air/heat problems...

hi all...been reading all the threads i can find about replacing the "flapper door" that messes with getting air to the defrost and floor vents...right now i have a VERY small amount of air at my defroster..none on the floor..all coming from the ac vents.......

so today it was 72 and beautiful so i figured i would go out and take apart the dash and all to see if i could find a fix...now i have read all about the door flapper and how to replace it...but when i move it by hand so that all the air goes to the defroster..nothing happens...my ac is sweating underneath the hood, but i cant even get cold air to blow...im not sure what my next steps are...all the vaccuum lines inside the truck i have connected and disconnected, and either way, air still blows like a hurricane through the ac vents..but none on the floor or defroster...

as of now, the truck is still torn apart, and ill be driving my other truck tommorow..but i need the 86 asap...so any and all help is appreciated..

If I understand right, you are just moving the actuator and NOT the actual flapper door?

Search some more and you will find discussions about changing the door itself which is what goes bad the most often and is causing your problem. Your actuators are likely working fine, the problem is the door itself has broken at the hinge and thus is not closing off the vents so the air will be forced to the floor or defroster ducts.

On mine the hinge was partially there but enough was broken that it would just twist uselessly only partially closing. You can buy a new flapper for a few bucks and then change it out in a few minutes since it is already torn apart.

That door has to close ALL the way and seal tight or the air wont go where it needs to. Even if you see it move a bit but not all the way, it isn't doing any good.

Good Luck,

Lee

Have you verified all cables and/or controls are working?

I am having the same problem. I just tore apart the floor heater duct and stuck my hand up to the flapper. I can hear it move and also feel it shut when I move the controls. It seems to be just fine. I still only have heat through the vents...

Update

ok...so today, the sun came up, and i was able to get back to work on my truck...thanks to the help of "million" and a few others threads, i was able to sorta fix it....

no, that diagram looks close, but not exact to what i have...but heres what i found...
i was able to find the white door, so i unplugged all the vaccuum lines, and kinda cleaned them out...ie=blow...and i put them all back together...well, when i hooked the yellow one to the solenoid, the damn door started to move in correlation with the selector...but the hinge is messed up, so i needed to the truck back today, so i just went ahead and closed the vent up ,so now i have my defrost back...so now the question is...how do i get the hinge to work.....

i see like one little white plastic rivet that holds the door to the actuator lever...but whats the process from here...? thanks for all the help

Mine looks different, would have to look again to make sure.

I believe a screw fell into the defrost vent a while back once when I took off the dash pad...I am thinking about going to get an extendable magnet pickup or magnet on string of some sort tomorrow...

I forget what the controls say right now there is a lot of movement on the last 2 or 3 settings (..., ..., defrost) but on the ac side of the selector, there is little movement from the rod that moves the flapper door.

Is is hard to remove the defrost ducting and get to the flapper door directly?

None the less, thanks for the time of just reading...

The hinge is nothing more than a weak spot on the flapper door itself. You could do like dcunningham said and attach a hinge to the flapper but it wold still be a lot of work. You can just buy the whole assembly from ford.

I think it is just riveted in. I just drilled out the 3 or 4 rivots and then rivoted the new one in again. I guess you could use screws of some sort if you don't have a rivot gun.

I wouldn't go to all the time of putting a hinge in as with my luck I would get it crooked or something but maybe you have better luck than me. I don't think a new flapper cost more than maybe 20 bucks and after it is fixed, it will be good as new and stock. Maybe it is just me but I hate jury rigging stuff and like to keep things as close to original as possible unless it is a performance upgrade.

Good Luck,

Lee
