Just Recently I replaced the injecter pump on my 1993 Ford F250 7.3 Diesel Non turbo and it started running after not running for awhile. Everytime I try to start it, it turns on runs for a sec and turns off, Then i have to crank it for awhile before it turns on. I have replaced the fuel filter, glow plugs, and air filter. Can someone please help me figure out what's wrong with the truck.
Being a 93. Look at the fuel injector return lines. Are they painted "gray" . If they are replace them. What is happening is that the small cracks on the hoses are letting air into the fuel system letting the fuel return to the fuel tank. Replacing the fuel with air. You will not see fuel leak out but being old the air will go in.
Also look at the fuel lines along the frame. If they are rusty they will leak air in also. I found a very rusty spot under a hold down clip on the frame on my 93.
Hope this helps or at least give you a starting point.
The return lines are probably where your problem is located.
Do watch cranking the starter for extended periods, they overheat and die easily.
20 seconds of cranking, 2 minutes cool down time can save you many dollars at the parts store.
