two-tone cab question

My 77 is red with a white cab top. After digging in with a sander to prep for paint I notice that the entire cab was painted white then red over that (up to the cab back and top of the A pillars. Was that typical? Seems like there's built-in corrosion protection in an extra layer of paint if so.

1967-1972 F Series F100-F350

That's the way it was done at the factory. On tu-tones, the entire truck was painted the lighter contrasting color. Then the darker color was applied.

Originally the lighter color was on the roof and lower body, with the contrasting darker color between.

On these models, there are more variations.

On 1973-1976 trucks, the darker color is on the upper body and roof, with the lighter color below the scallop or side moulding.

On 1977-1979 trucks with the "race track" mouldings the darker color was between the mouldings, with the lighter color everywhere else.

On 1977-79 trucks without the race track moulding, the color scheme is the same as the 1973-1976 trucks.
