Hello I just got a 70 f100 short wheel base & was told it has a 351m but it may be a 351c. I don't know how to tell the diffence but the engine is smoking baddly and my grandfother gave me a 87 460 and auto trans from A 1 ton f350 the engine has a 4bbl carb and a sticker on it where ford payed extra to have it with out the smog stuff it is a commercail engine with 66,000 miles does any one know if the trans on the engine that year is a c6 or a aod or how i can tell the deffernce.
There should be a metal ID tag on the tranny that should look like this:
If it's still there, get back to us with the info on so we can decode it to determine for sure what tranny you have.
And not that it matters since you're planning to yank the old motor anyway, but in 1970 the 351M wasn't being built yet and the 351C wasn't available in trucks, so if it's either one of those, someone swapped it in. If it's a Cleveland it's worth hanging on to as they're starting to get a bit rare.
Thanks For the info. I know the engine not the orginal I got the truck off my cuzion and he was told it was a 351m but i don't know how to tell for sure, but i will get them casting #s off both this weekend. If it is a 351c will the motor mounts still work for the 460? Right now i am just intrested in getting the truck going becouse i am all ways needing a truck haul garbage off, My 70 maverick, and ect. the truck is not in bad shape but does need so tlc. I will get him to send me a pic of the truck if he still has one and i will post it here.
D3VE heads are open-chambered heads with combustion chambers measuring approx. 97cc's. They are pedestal style rocker mount.
C8, C9 or D0VE heads are closed chambered and have stud mount style rockers, they have 75-77cc combustion chambers and, in my opinion, are the more desireable heads to start off with.
