I've had a 49 F4 stakebed for about 10 years now, and finally it has become the next project. I am hoping to find a way of keeping the I Beam in front, but need better brakes. Has anyone actually completed adding 1 ton Dually type hubs and disks on one of these? Need help on that. Also I'm thinking Toyota steering, but is there something better for the I Beam. Last issue ... what rear axle would be best for the dually setup, with better gearing, and not be too wide? I've even thought of using the F7/8 fenders and grille on front to use a later wider setup? Not sure how compatible that would be?? I'll be using a 460 and C6 in this truck. It will stay a stakebed, and no I don't have an original script bed..... sigh!!
Anyway .... thanks in advance for the advice and ideas.
I don't know off any 8 bolt dually hubs that will work with your stock axle. The way I know of is to go to the later twin-I-beam setup like I did.
Now the rear axle I can help with. A Dana 70 out of a 67-79 F-350 is practically a bolt in. The spring perches are in the right spot. You probably will have to alter the stock driveshaft length and different U-bolts. The Dana 70 has an axle diameter of 3.56". It was available in the following axle ratios 3.54:1, 3.73:1, 4.10:1, 4.56:1, 4.88:1. The hub to hub measurement is 64.3". I've attached a diagram with measurements of the axle.
51Dueller,
Thanks... that diagram is perfect!! I sort of figured that the front end would be a problem, but at least the rear is a simple fix. I even happen to know of a complete 2wd F350 chassis. I'm wondering if the spindles and all from that might be adaptable to the F4 axle. Guess I'll be finding out.
This F4 was a flathead alright, but of the 6 cylinder variety. I still have it along with another 6 from an F6, a 1941 V8, a 1951 V8, and a good running 52 V8. All of these will be up for sale this summer sometime. It is currently impossible to do anything with them as the weather here is in the deep freeze and my shop is not large enough to house any of the big trucks these are in. (F4 - F6)
Stay tuned for later on....... I'll be putting an ad in the classifieds here then.
I do like a big truck. robertr I'll get back to you this summer. I've already got a woman(and a good one at that) but I've never had a truck like that before, there's a first time for everything.
