Unhappy Fuel Additives?????

With the new low sulfur fuel my 6.0 has dropped in fuel mileage and power. Has anyone had the same problem? Does anyone use any type fuel additives or cetane boost type products? Do these products help?

As you can imagine, this has been discussed many times in this forum. You can find much input at the following link.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...t=diesel+klean

If you desire more info you can search the 6.0 forum.

In regards, to use with the ULSD fuel. I highly recommend it. It was important before...even more so now IMO.

With that said. I would not use it it the new 6.4 since no one has said it is safe to use with the particulate filter....so we have to be careful when recommending fuel additives now.

I started using Stanadyne per a couple diesel shops recommendation, treats the fuel for gelling, H20 absorption and bumps up the cetane number. I have a 06 F350 dually tow boss with 5000 miles. I noticed a slight gain in mpg, from about mid 15s to 16. Not much really, could be my right foot. I havent noticed power loss, but w 4:30s the truck gets up and goes

They are safe to use with the 6.4L PSd motors or any using the particulate filter.... but there are lables to look for.

PowerService and Howes (I use both) have labled and even detailed why their products are safe for the new 2008 motor. This is due to the fact that they add none to very little (trace element) of sulfur to the fuel... and which still keeps the fuel at or below 15ppm sulfur content.

For example, Howes makes a product called "Meaner Kleaner" and it states to use very little as it contains sulfur and may raise it above the 15ppm level for safe operation of the particulate filter.

This is why Walmart pulled Powerservice off their shelves until the new lables wer printed and the various additive companies could demonstrate their safe use with ULSD fuel and with trucks with particulate filters.

With so many additives to choose from, look for additives that specifically state "safe for use on 2007 and newer trucks requiring the use of ULSD fuel". If in doubt, call the company and ask... it is all about sulfur content and whether it keeps the fuel at or below 15ppm!!!

I've got a 2003 6.0 and run Lucas fuel additive. Does it help power? - I don't think so. Does it help mileage? - I don't think so. I calculate mpg on EVER tank and have been getting 16.5 average since I bought the truck. The first year I didn't use any additives. I purchase the Lucas in the slight hope that it actually delivers on one of its promises and prolongs my engines life.

My experience with fuel additives is limited to: Power Service (Gray bottle) and the Motor Craft brand additives. Only with the Motor Craft brand could I calculate a fuel mileage improvement. Also the Motor Craft brand made the injectors very quite to the point where you cannot even hear them while driving at highway speeds. I typically get 1-2mpg gain with the MC brand using both LSD and ULSD. I have not tried the PS brand with the ULSD to date. Also every time I purchase the MC brand from the local Ford dealer, the guy who sells it tells me everytime that the diesel mechanics who work there who owns diesels love this stuff.

If your looking strictly for mpg improvements with ULSD, I highly recommend the Motor Craft fuel additive. It costs ~$6 a bottle and treats 125 gallons.

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the term LSD (other than recreational use) and ULSD. Could you help me with this. Does the Motorcraft product promote longer engine life?

LSD - Low Sulfur Fuel (>500ppm sulfur) - being phased out

ULSD - Ultra Low Sufur Diesel (<15ppm) - being phased in as we speak

Third part of your question... no real answer... but lubricity and cleaners make for a longer lasting motor is used consistently... but then again... so people never use and get a lot of miles out of their trucks... so you will have to do your own research to answer that one!!!

I love how the emissions control works in California. Buses and big rigs belch out some nasty black smoke. I'm not sure I've ever seen a F250/350, Dodge cummins, etc belch anything yet we get grouped in and take a big share in the brunt of the cost of "cleaner" diesel. The diesel fuel is already priced ridiculously. Now, we have to worry about the fuel damaging motors.

I recently saw Howes fuel additive at a local TA station and it cost under $10 a bottle and said that it treated up to 700 gallons. Is this correct? I usually use PS diesel kleen grey bottle for $15 and treats 300 gallons.

700 gal for $10 that would be a good deal. I thought I was getting a good deal on PowerService (White Bottle). I just picked up a case of 12 32oz bottles for $35.

Makes you start to wonder what the markup on these products is. I know when I considered Stanadyne, the best I could find locally was a case of 12 16oz bottles for $60.

Where did you buy your PS additive at? I live in Houston and usually buy from walmart at $15 for the 96oz grey bottle. I don't know how good the Howes is I'm just going off what I read on the bottle and the price. The bottle of PS next to it was over $15 for the 96oz.

I bought my first couple of bottles at Walmart like you, because they always had the best price. Now my father is getting it for me from his work. Where they buy it from im not sure. They have used it on there entire diesel fleet of semi's, 6.0L's and 7.3L's for years. So they always have a few cases in stock! As a added bonus I like the 32oz size better than the 96oz. Its easier to carry around and I get 3 fills out of a bottle with my 29gal tank.
