my daughter has a 97 explorer 4.0 sohc auto 4 speed 4r44e or a A4LDE (were not really sure),last night the od off light flashed on dash and it shifted hard in all gears, told her to turn overdrive off ,and run it like that for a while ,she got to her destination ,shut off truck it sat 3or 4 hr ,when she came back to her truck it started an was ok shifted fine ,today i decided to change the filter an fluid, locked it in low lock an pulled it up on ramps pulled pan and filter, there was some sludge in the pan it felt a little gritty ,found a bolt from the valve body in the pan ,put it back in place, and know it seems like the trans is stuck in lockup. Every time you put it in gear it stalls, after it makes a loud cluck noise. When finally being able to get the truck moving it seemed like it was taking off in a higher gear. Even in reverse it seemed like the motor was lugging and the truck was moving quickly in reverse. While driving it, it seemed fine shifting into all gears. I drove it about a half mile and stopped. it sat there and idled fine in drive. I drove another half mile and came to another stop and it was fine. i then put it in reverse and it clunked and stalled. Now everytime i put it in drive or reverse it clunks then stalls. What it feels like is the torque converter is in constant lockup. If anybody has any prior knowledge on this any help is appretiated.
