I finally got my 285/75 Nitto Terra Grapplers in (they had sent load range D the first time) and mounted. They look a little bigger than the stock size 265/75 tires and are just a tad "ballooned out" because I am using the stock rims. One thing I discovered was that my speedometer was showing about 2 mph high at 70, being an actual 68 mph by GPS. With the new tires on the truck the speedo is reading dead on. I have not run a tank through it yet with the new tires but will update when I have some preliminary data on what effect on economy the bigger tires have.
i've got the same tires, but 18",and they are louder than the continentals a little.theres noticeable noise but just a low hum compared to the "i have no traction" quietness of the conti's.
Noise is not any big deal with these tires, in fact they are fairly quiet. I don't even have a half tank of fuel on them yet but I think I'll be getting a bit less MPG out of them. That's not a big suprise though, is it? I'll be posting once I get actual figures on them...
I got my wife a new digital movie/still camera for Christmas, I'll need her help to figure out how to get pics up. Once I have it fugured out I'll post some shots of the new tires. Those 245/75s are both narrower and shorter than stock so it's not a suprise that you show higher than actual mph and also higher mpg(since those tires, being shorter than stock, show higher miles than actual). I'm coming up on about half a tank and miles are about what I'd expect so maybe I'll get about the same, given the correction factor...
I've had my 285 Nitto Terra G's on for, I guess, about 3 months and 5k miles. They have gotten a little louder, but not bad. They do wander a little more than I care for though. My mileage initially seemed to go up a little bit when not hooked to the trailer, and down a little bit when it was. The average stayed about the same.
After 3 sets of BFG 285/75/16's and my first set of Nitto Terra Grappler 295/75/16's, I just bought another set of the Nitto's. Traction was better, wear was better, and both were quiet if rotated often. Nitto's don't have raised white letters, but run about 25% less than the BFG's. For my use, they have proven superior, and at a discount. Oh, the Nitto 295's were 25% less than the BFG's. One guy in the forums stated he got his BFG 285's from Discount Tire in S/W Michigan for $782, but that doesn't include mounting, balancing, and tax. Comes to a tad over $900 out the door for the BFG's. My Nitto's ran $540 delivered to my door and $44 for mounting and balancing thru Discount Tier Direct.
OK, I ran 377.6 miles on 22.638 gallons for close to 16.7. I did engage the 4X4 for the drive in to work one day which I am going to do at least once a month for PM and I'm sure that didn't help any. I did a "correction factor" calcualtion for the old tires and came up with a corrected mileage of 17.2 MPG based on 3.6% size difference in the tires and the fact that the speedometer now reads correct actual speed based on GPS verification. I had also noticed that the radar trailers the police set up on the roadsides seemed to show my speed slightly lower than I thought it was, which makes sense in hindsight.
Granted this data is just preliminary and we are currently in the coldest weather we've had in almost a year due to the unusually warm weather we've had so far. I've been letting the truck warm up before driving it and from what I've read it is not unexpected to see lower numbers in the winter. I did use 16 oz. of PS on this last fill, just to be sure I had enough anti-gel in the tank. It's hanging just above single digits as I type this...
OK folks, back again with more fresh data. Even though we hit a cold snap here in Connecticut, after two tanks I figured mileage to be 15.9 even with extended warm up periods, some playing with 4X4 a tad, etc. basicaly more "in town" and other low mileage activity. I'm just guessing, but I'd expect maybe a point or two over 16 if I'd just been going back and forth to work.
Since I spent the last two days putting some of the goodies on, I won't be able to differentiate any longer the effect the tires alone have had. I've done the tranny flush, installed the Dieselsite tranny filter and Mag-Hytec tranny pan. I've also done the differential covers and Fluidamper so I have fresh fluids and high capacity covers front, mid and rear and I can tell you that vibration from the engine seems a lot smoother just from the drive home. I'm hoping for a slight boost from the Fluidamper, the covers are more for reliability and longevity form my perspecctive.
If anyone's still interested I'll post back again after a few more tanks, just let me know.
I have 305/70/16 Nitto TG's on stock rims. I've had them for about 10k miles and couldn't be happier. Excellant traction wet or dry and pretty good off road traction for an A/T.
