This started off with the passenger side but now has infested my drives door as well. in order to close either door i really have to SLAM the door. and even that doesn't always do it. it's gotten so bad i can see a dent forming on the door on the opp. side as the grip handle. i've tried adjusting the catch. that doesn't do it. any other help? Maybe the door hinges are out of allignment? any help? thanks
My 92 was the same way when I had it for the drivers door. very hard to shut, I had to lift up and shut hard. Turned out that the hinges needed replaced.
I guess after awhile the can sag and cause the latches not to line up. It may not be that, but that caused it on my 92. It's not to hard to replace yourself either if you've got the time.
Try grabbing the door at the bottom on the latch side and lifting it up and down . If the hinges are good there should be very little or no movement at all at the pins. If that is ok try a little bit of white grease on the latch pin and lock assembly and see if that helps. White grease is a little easier to get off your clothes if you rub against it.
If it is the pins in the hinges all you have to replace is the PINS and PIN BUSHINGS. You can get those at almost any parts place. I have found that if you cut one pin at a time and remove and replace the pin and bushing one at a time its easyer than removing the whole hinge.
You can replace the pins,,,I didnt have any so I shimmed the thing up to compensate for the wear. Think I stuck washers in behind the bottom hinge bolts to prop it up.
The pins are available in the HELP! parts area of most parts stores for about $5 each pin and bushing set. I would suggest using the fiberglass reinforced Dremel cutting wheel, the little thin red ones will break too easily cutting the pin. I need to get out and finish doing mine, my 17YO Dremels rubber tube clutch was too old to handle the job, just fixed the Dremel, need to do the truck now.
Yeah, my 95 is the same way. I got pissed one day because the door wouldn't close properly. I pulled HARD from the inside to close it. Bad move. My inside door handle mechanism broke free from the sheet metal under the door panel. I think it was weak anyway, but that was the straw that broke the camel's back. I just came back from the welding shop. They tacked the mechanism into place. Now I'm gonna try to actually fix the door instead of just slamming it all the time.
The pins were replaced in mine just before I got it. But still sagging . The alignment is good when closed .So I have to replace hinges as its still moving . I had ones on parts truck that I put on 3 years ago with factory new ones . Check old hinges real well if worn though the bushings you may have to replace hinges. Try pins fist they are cheap. Good luck
Look at your Striker Bolt too....if it doesn't have the nylon/plastic/whatever it is where the door catches....it can be part of the problem too. My 92 is sagging a little but I got a new Striker bolt and adjusted it (Haynes tells you how) so I don't have to slam near as hard now. Eventually I'll get the hinge pins replaced. You can get the Door Striker replacement in the help section at PepBoys i know......I got mine at the dealer......cost $7 more.
Good Luck
i was actually messing with the bolt today... the door doesn't seem to sag. I can't move it up and down hardly at all. when i finally get the door to close easily... it still rattles a bit when i hit bumps... and it doesn't sit flush with the rest of the body... any suggestions?
mine rattled till i put the new striker in and adjusted it to close. That material i'm talking about was gone from my striker......just a steel stud sticking out......you need that stuff on it to close and hold the door tight in.
The striker can be adjusted in and out and up and down to make the door flush and tight. Took about 10 minutes and a few closes.
I've finally taken the time to look at my door on my 95. The pins and bushings feel good but the striker is shot. Also the plastic wheel that holds the door open has a flat spot worn into it. I'll have to replace both. I'd like to include a pic showing the nylon worn on the striker that 92fi50flare was talking about, but my posting rules don't allow it. I'll have to figure out why. If you're having trouble getting the door to close tightly, look at your striker. Seems like a relatively easy fix.
