I have a 94 areostar 3.0 with 205,000 miles. I noticed there was a coolant leak, a streem coming from just under the alternator. When I opened the radiator cap, to add some water, I noticed a redish-brown slug in the rediator. It was transimission fluid. The transimission and engine dip sticks have no signs of coolent. The transmission fluid was low enough to cause the transmission not shift properly. Does this mean that the radiator needs replacing?
I appreciate may help anyone can give me.
Tranmission fluid in radiator means you must do two things:
1) Replace radiator
2) Flush transmission
The transmission oil cooler inside the radiator is leaking, allowing transmission fluid to get into the radiator, and possibly coolant into the transmission.
also replace radiator cap....
oils in ATF will cause seals in radaitor cap to swell and break down...causing either overpressure or cap leaks....neither good especially if seal blows out
also flush out overflow tank
i'll third changing the ATF....critical...do NOT drive until radiator changed and ATF changed
Ditto! Replace the radiator. I would flush the tranny and the cooling system. Hopefully it was positively pressurized and coolant didn't get sucked into the tranny.
There's no way to prevent this. Failure was internal.
