load capacity for 89 Lariat Long bed

All you can get off the door tag is GVWR, which is the maximum weight on all four tires. To get what you can carry, you have to subtract the weight of your truck (presumably with you and a full load of fuel in it), obtained from a SCALE, from the GVWR. On the '90 in my sig, that worked out to roughly 1500 lbs.

Yes, they will haul more than what the tag says, but it's definitely not good for them, particularly the 1/2-tons (F150s). Not to mention, the brakes start to become an issue. I put 3000 lbs. of gravel in my F150 a couple times, and that was too much. The brakes did okay because we're pretty flat around here, but I could tell they were near their limit and a panic stop could have been the end of them (and maybe me and others in front of me...). Plus, if you start hauling heavy loads, everything wears out more quickly, from the driveline to the suspension components, to axles and brakes. I can tell a HUGE difference between my F150 and my F250 (which I haven't weighed, but based on paperwork, it should be rated to haul ~2800 lbs).
