Maybe we could help Ford with some ideas:
Let's see it is still going to be along the modular design, how about the "Mod Squad part II" Or the "Guzzler" Ford isn't exactly know for their high MPG.
I still like the Hurricane name.........though some in LA. and MS. may not agree.
I don't like the use of the Boss name. The Boss was a very limited special engine option, not a mass produced motor. Let's leave the Boss name for future Mustangs and Ford Racing models.
Let's hope they change the name from Premium V8. I can't think of a more non-descript name for an engine. Seems like their names model their car design. Uninspiring.
FORD MOTOR COMPANY "WE BUILD BORING CARS AND GIVE THEM STUPID NAMES."
"WE ALSO GIVE OUR ENGINES STUPID NAMES."
"GOOD THING PEOPLE LIKE OUR TRUCKS OR WE'D BE SCREWED!"
"WE HATE V10s BUT WE HAVE ALL THESE PARTS LAYING AROUND..."
Well Art, we aren't talking about V10s anymore so I guess you can lock up this thread too. I don't know if the V10 is going away but I am telling you I am going away.
This is my last post and I hope all you V10 guys have the best of luck with your engines and it has been a slice, but time for me to move on. All the best to everyone.

I have no problem leaving discussions like this one going, as the "V10 going away?" question DOES have something to do with the Hurricane/Boss/Premium V8 ...
"It has been rumored that the Hurricane will retain many of the Modular V8 design cues such as a deep skirt block with cross bolted main caps, oiling system design, and multivalve overhead camshaft valve train arrangement but it will have much wider bore spacing and bearing surfaces."
Finally an evolution of an engine instead of a "revolution." Let's see if it actually happens that way..
I can see why they would drop the v10 if the new v8 can be punched out to 7.0 liters. That does mean we could get an 8.8 v10 though..

The new engine will be call the Boss with is also known as the Hurricane engine. If you google the term Ford Hurricane motors there is a wealth of information. An example would be: http://www.answers.com/topic/ford-boss-engine
Ford has said that due to the narrow bore spacing on the mod motors (4.6, 5.4 and sadly the 6.8), that the new 'Hurricane' series is it's next engine. It will be offered in the F-150 first, then the Mustang.
It will not be an overhead cam motor. It is OHV, much like the LS1, LS2 and LS6 GM has that is basically killing Ford in the HP wars. And GM is being massacred by Daimler Chrysler's new Hemi's. In addition to the 6.1 SRT8 engine available in the line of cars, DCX is now offering a 392 crate engine. 550 hp in the carb'd version, 525 hp in the SFI version. 495 ft lbs of torque in each. THAT is impressive. The OHV as opposed to the OHC will allow for cylinder deactivation.
I don't know about the Hurricane being called the 'Boss', since Ford has a new 'Boss crate engine' out, but it's a variation of the old 302. Not a new engine by any stretch of the imagination.

There was a discussion somewhere on this site about this. It WAS a "Boss" going to be modeled on the modular, an OHC, deep-skirt, cross-bolt mains, etc.
I have not heard anything from anywhere that it's a pushrod motor.

That would be a shame.
yes it will be a shame. But the costs, the added weight, the additional tooling and milling costs are very real. Ford is fighting for it's life. The brauha when the 4.6 replaced the 5.0 was tremendous. Less power, less torque, more cost to the buyer and the basic size were all downers to the hot rodders. Even now look under the hod of any 10 second Mustang. It's a Windsor block. The mod motors just couldn't hang together like the OHV blocks could. Simply because no manufacturer would spend the bucks to make a race block. Nascar never went to OHC, drag racers didn't either, and those guys are the guys spending beau coup bucks for engines. To get more block spacing to keep up in the hp wars the sheer size of an OHC engine would preclude it going into anything other than a 1 ton pick-up. Ford is basically saying good bye to the mod small block, and HELL-O good looking to the return of the big block. If it makes you feel any better it will still be a modular motor, in varying sizes. The mack daddy will be a 7.0 liter.
