Went to move my dads 99 7.3 today and wouldnt start. I know the batteries are dead so called the tow truck to jump start with no luck. As soon as i started cranking it over the tow man noticed that fuel was leaking out big time. So we stopped and ran someother errands in another car. Got home crawled underneathe to see if i could find where it was leaking from and found it. There are two what looks fuel lines towards the front bottom of the engine. One of them is free and open and that is where the fuel is trickling from. My question is why is this happening? Is the other fuel line supposed to be connected to something? (the one that is leaking)....my thoughts are maybe fuel filter, fuel pump???? maybe could not having enough juice on the batteries cause this to happen???? some help would be appreciated.......
the truck is a 99 like i said and only about 60K. not driven very much......thanx
it is comming out of the drain to the fule filter. if you look on top of the engine and find the filter canster on teh back of it sis a yellow leaver it is to drain the water out of the fule filter housing. there are two o-rings that will fail and leak
doi like big daddy said and search for fule leak
Keith
just looked from underneath and it was an open fuel line....looks like it may go and connect to the top side......if this is the case could there be anyother reason for the leak besides o-rings.....now that it is leaking we do recall its prolly been leaking for awhile..slowly and now like crazy.....
if you follow the open hose up it should go to the filter houseing. that way when you open the drain the fule will run out the hose and not into the valley of the engine. when mine went it was slow at first then one day it was like the value was open
thats the one then.....so then replacing the o rings is what i need to do then??? im having a hard time finding the o-rings ford parts has the whole assembly for $61...is it worth it??
Are you talking about a drain tube on the passenger side of the truck with an open end where fuel dumps on the ground, or are you talking about the driver's side near the framerail, where the fuel lines leave the framerail and attach to the engine?
luvemhot thanx for the help and the offer for the o-rings. i went ahead and just purchased the whole unit from ford....my fear was that it wasnt gonna be just the o-rings so i just replaced the whole unit...solved the problem.....it was def an easy solution but not an easy repair.....being as i have huge hands and not a lot of patients it took me the better part of two hours.....once it was complete and put the new batteries on it fired right up......
another question i have...im assuming that big round cover under the other black cover is the element that seperates the water from the fuel.....am i right?? if that is the case does it need to be replaced.....just for a refresher this is my pops truck i just got a new 07 6.0 psd......so i guess next ill be asking the guys in that forum about seperating water and fuel.......

thanx for the good info guys!!!!!!
That should be the lid to your filter under the filter bowl cap. If it has not been replaced lately, replace it. The water seperator function takes place there but more by volume and settling than filtering and therefore you should have no water in there with your recent leak. Got to the FTE homepage and look up tech articles for the how-to on this. Real simple, just watch the orings.
