Yet Another Fuel Tank Question

Hey Guys,

Hopefully this one will be easy to answer. My truck is a '70 F-100 Ranger XLT with a thirsty 460 and a non-op fuel gauge...makes trips around town interesting

I am looking into installing a '70 Mustang tank and using the Mustang sending unit. The real question I have is will the F-100 gauge work with the Mustang's sending unit? I have searched around but haven't been able to find an answer or any info regarding this issue.

Thanks,
Eric

They have different Electrical values.

5 volt pulsing signal

The truck has a 8.5 ohm resistance in it.

Here is the truck SU.

I'll check around for the Mustang's values.

Exclamation D0zz

Some 1970 Mustangs used Evaporative Emissions Controls. There will be a coffee can hole in a tank w/Evap Emission.

Avoid this tank!!

Have you verified the cause of your trucks inoperative fuel gauge?

The float, screen and gasket are available by themselves. (they are the same parts used on a Mustang fuel gauge)

The float is 2 pieces of copper soldered together, the solder splits apart, and gas enters the float. Eventually the float will sink, causing the gauge to read empty.

Ford parts Numbers

C0AF-9276-B gasket

C0AZ-9202-A Float

C0AZ-9A011-A Screen

Thanks for the info guys.

Number: I am looking to remove the in-cab tank as it's full of rusty water from sitting for 20 years. I was hoping to relocate the tank to the rear and gain some storage behind the seat. As for the gauge, I am currently using one of the saddle tanks that has no sending unit. Thanks for the heads up on the tank.

I wonder if a 73-79 rear tank would work. I was worried it might be too wide, but if it's not would that sending unit be compatible? I'm trying to avoid adding an aftermarket fuel gauge if at all possible.

Thansk again.

Question

That must be some sort of aftermarket saddle tank, as the Ford tanks had sending units. The switch was mounted on the floor below the left side of the seat. Fey Bumper Co. used to install these tanks in the LA area. Where is the saddle tank(s) mounted...in front of the rear wheels? I've seen some rear tanks on the left..behind the rear wheel too, but these aren't Ford, but the later '73/ trucks had both tanks on the left.

Eric, You can make a 73 or later tank work at the rear of the truck. It will not fit between the frame rails, but by making the bracketry you can install it there.

Number: I'm guessing the tanks are aftermarket, there was 2 of them. Both are plastic and mounted in front of the rear wheels. The truck does have the switch on the floor, but I didn't see any fomoco marking on either of the side tanks.

John: With the 73 and up model tank will it have to be mounted above or below the rails? I ask because I was wondering if it would hang down and just look wrong if mounted below. Do you have any idea if the sending unit will work?

I really appreciate the info guys.

Your guess is correct. Ford never mounted a saddle tank on the RIGHT side.

Hey John, just to clarify, this is the style of tank I was thinking of:

Ebay Item # 260075505512

This is shown for 73-78 and is a 19 gal. tank. Gives dimensions of 34 3/4" x 27" x 8 1/8" and it doesn't have the emmisions provisions. Is this the type of tank you were referring to?

Number: Those tanks didn't look like factory install either, kind of scary really. I uninstalled the worst one and added some extra bracing to the other in order to keep it from sliding around .

That looks like the 73-? tank. It is a replacement only, so there won't be any straps or other items needed for you to work with.

Your profile says that youre from Texas. I am sure that there salvage yards for you to get used tanks from. Some of the Broncos and vans have larger single tanks.

Yes the tank will be extended below normal, but you can't see it from the drivers seat. You will have to determan what it acceptable to you. IMHO
