I've been looking at ads for 96 - 2000 Explorers and many of them say "new transmission" or "rebuilt transmission". Is this really a big problem? I assume that at least the 97's have the 5R55E, but how long did they continue to use this transmission? I have the 4R55E in an 96 Aero and it only failed because of abuse, serious towing, and even then the torque converter is all that was wrong with it. Why all the problems in the Explorers?
And that transmission was used up to the 2002 models (when the new design was released with the 5 speed auto).
I don't know of any specific transmission problems on these... they actually seem more durable than most, but three factors could be a part of this:
1> High miles... there are a LOT of explorers with a ton of miles on them. Even the best automatic transmission only last so long
2> Abuse... people like to drive the HECK out of these things
3> Popularity... I've had other mechanics tell me how much junk the tauruses were/are... their reasoning being "at any given time there's always one or two on my shop!" but the real truth is that these cars were sooo dern popular... well there were several times more of these than just about any other car out there, so of course they are going to appear in the shops more often!
OK, what I believe I'm seeing here is pretty much summed up by mazdarangerguy, (other posts very helpful as well). Lots of them out there, people maybe abuse or buy abused ones and then try to unload them after a few problems. Like I posted, I think the 4R55E (96), is a good 4 speed, and the 5 speed 5R55E, 97 up, an upgraded 4R55E, are good transmissions. Thank you. I'll continue my search for one.
