A question now...

1976-1979 F100-F350 W/gauges: D6TZ-10K843-B
I have a '76 F350 with gauges. Any cluster from '76 to '79 with gauges should be the same, right?

Yes...and 1976/79 Econoline with gauges is the same cluster too.

Instrument cluster question

Bill,

I have a '77 F-350 CS. I've been trying to get my in-dash ammeter to work. Everything else works fine. Pulled the instrument cluster and chased the wires to the ribbon connector. They don't match the printed circuit locations on the instrument cluster for the ammeter. ... Here's the instr. cluster # D6TF10C956

Sure could use some help here.

Thanks,

Chuck

Bill: forgive this probably stupid comment but.... surely you have a voltmeter not an ammeter in your instrument cluster? It's been some months since I've looked at our '76 F250 instruments - is my memory failing? I wonder when Ford changed from Ammeters to Voltmeters was it the same time as the switch from generators to alternators (late 60s?)

Hi Bill,

I'm looking at the instr cluster now (out of the truck) and the needle is in the center. to the left of of needle is a large "D", and to the right of the needle is a large "C". This is how I concluded it' senses current not voltage.

I am I right or wrong?

Thanks,

Chuck

These trucks use Ammeters. They will show either a Charge or Discharge.

A Voltmeter shows volts. 0-15V, etc...

What I did was to take the 74 plug, cut off all the wires at about 10" and install spade connectors. On the 77 harness, I installed the spade receivers, and then I spent about 2 weeks tracing wires to figure out what each pin # on the circuit board did. You are fortunate that you are using the same year stuff. You can take the pins out of the 14 plug and reinsert them in the 18. They had different retainer clips for different years (I think) I can share my info with you if you want, but I am pretty sure that all my stuff is different since I didn't use anything 78.

Welcome to FTE, no problem we all have done it before. Maybe someone else with that issue will chime in with some advice.

I have answered at least 30 of these same threads

The 18 pin cluster uses a 18 pin printed circuit

The 14 pin uses 14 pin printed circuit .

It is that much Different that it is not interchangeable with the 18 pin system

You can't interchange them.

The sending units are different ..the ammeter wiring is different

You use one or the other.
By the Harness you have.
You want gauges ? get the 18pin gauge wiring harness.

You never said what year gauge cluster you got.
