heating system on drugs

Yea it's below zero in Montana and my 97 explorer limited heater works 50/50. Temp gauge seams to spike or drop according to heat being pumped out. Strange thing is when gauge spikes heat turns to cool air. The spike is rapid sets off SEE GAUGE and then drops. After reading other threads my thought would be themostat or the blend door but the spike in the gauge throws me. Forgot to mention this started before the sub zero weather started. No problem driving so far as Explore warms up great then goes crazy ! Any thoughts on this tread appreciated. Might have to pull XR4Ti outa garage to get consistant heat, problem XR has never been on the snow. Frozen in Montana !!!

You have a sticky T-stat, or anti freeze that is not mixed to a low enough temp and it is slush, accounting for the h/c flows, if it is spiking change it before it sticks shut..and warps your heads...

Start with a T-stat and a good coolant flush. While you're at it remove the heater core hoses and flush them out with water pressure until you get good flow in both directions.

If this doesn't cure the problem I might suspect a head gasket leak or something, leaking combustion gases into the cooling system...
