GO STEAM!!!, Oh wait, modern. For ease of install, parts availability, I'd say a 302/351W. Efi, I'd find a newer Lincoln or Mustang GT. Use the engine, harness, ecm, Aod/T5, independent rear, etc... Carbed, I'd find a good core and build it up. My 2 cents. For absolutely newest, I'd recommend the Viper V10, like I saw on Truck Stop this morn.
I guess I must be the only real "oddball" around here. I'd put some sort of diesel in it. The newer Mercedes CDI diesels are supposed to be really fast and clean, so that's probably what I would use. I don't have anything against a Powerstroke, but they are just too heavy for our application.
After reading this thread, I'd say my SHO setup is pretty mild! As for the *****'s truck.............ka-*****, ka-*****. Now where did I leave my rich Uncle?
The 300 I6 is a great truck engine, but you will be pushed for room to install it into an 56 and older truck. There is a lot to say for the diesels, but remember they come with a lot of special sound deadeners - If you want to be able to hear your stereo I would pass on them.
The 302/351 are the most common, because most people think they are the best choice. For myself, I would consider one of the newer modular engines.
I saw a picture of a World Small Block, the had the Original Gold Color 289 Valve Covers, 289 Oil Pan, The Only thing that couldn't be well hidden were the 2 Huge 4 Pots sitting under the Cobra Air Cleaned, 427 Cu In 450 Hp 510 Torque.
Now that'd be fun, I don't care who ya are.
I got a 302 with an AOD....so my opinion is justified by my truck already (it works!!!!!) good mileage and a little take off the line power...haven't had one RICER try me yet but when it happens, they better watch out....NOS doesn't have nothing on an old engine built FORD tough!!!!!!!!

STEAM......thats so easy, even a caveman could do it!!! Sorry, too much coffee this morning. Really tho....what ever engine you use, make sure it has a carburator, no FI with computers. That way the gov can't find out were you are with a satilite. LOL......
I guess I should have mentioned that I'm thinking a carb'ed engine would be simpler, since you don't have to mess with the computer, wireing harness and all that crap. But I do admit the thought of a 5.4 puts a grin on my face.
Maybe steam is the way to go after all . . . hmmm.
btw, I can't belive how many great responses there have been to my post. This forum rules!
