Replacing Ranger 2.9

Yes the 4.0 will bolt right in, but it has to be pre 1994. I can't remember exactly why... I believe the intakes changed and it caused bracketry to change and move the power steering to a interference location... I'm not certain though... I know its something really goofy like that...
I would stick to the 2.9 seeing as how you found a good one.

The 2.9 engine I located [through a local newspaper ad] was actually a new engine placed in a 89 Ranger, driven approximately 10,000 mi then wrecked. The engine sat in a fellows basement for the last several years. We have the engine installed and will probably get it started within the next day or two. I'll let you know how things go.
